Question re the original "Thomas Crown Affair" ending- spoiler if you haven't seen it

I admit I probably should have been paying more attention, but anyway, re the original with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. At the end when she is crying because he is not there to be arrested and has stood her up re his promise to surrender. Is she sad because he has as tricked her and dumped her, or are they happy, emotional tears because he got away and now wants her to join him … or what? Didn’t quite get it.

I think I missed just enough of it to be a bit baffled by the ending.

I’ve listened to the audio of the producer along with the movie on dvd (they put the old one to DVD).

He said she was sad because she lost her only chance at love (because they were perfect together), in order to try and win.

As the producer said, “Its a love story between two shits”

She’d be sad regardless of whether or not she caught him. No matter what, at that point she’s lost him, even if she gets the money.

That was my take; she regretted her choices, but not just the ones that had brought her to that point.
