You forgot
You are twice as likely to be killed by lightning and 2650 time more likely to be killed by the flu than a dog…and the problem is the people who have them and not the breed. The crappy owners will just switch to Rottweilers or Dobermans or what ever breed that they think is “bad ass”.
As a breed american staffordshire terriers are very friendly if people don’t result to BS alpha roles and other bullshit.
To be fair to the OP we haven’t eliminated people being killed by lightning either, and that’s unfortunate. The unfortunate event being probable isn’t specified as being a necessary condition, just that it’s still happening now and then despite our best efforts.
It was the breed attribution that is a problem as 75% of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon intake, without them ever having any chance at adoption.
Killing other animals due to irrational fears and pure ignorance is also an unfortunate event.
These shelters can’t even identify the breed BTW, this is just deciding to kill all dogs that look similar and is inhumane.
We may not be able to eliminate all drunk driving fatalities, but we have eliminated half of them since 1982 (.pdf).
1982 = 21,113 U.S. drunk driving fatalities
2016 = 10,497 U.S. drunk driving fatalities
About 350,000 lives have been saved.
If you’re hoping to have me join you in outrage over the treatment of pit-bull-looking dogs, I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed, because I have a massive phobia and hate all dogs. “Irrational fears” or not, as far as I’m concerned if they’re euthanized without undue suffering I’m cool with it.
Lets just hope that you don’t fear Muslims, Jews or Atheists then…seeing as genocide is OK if something isn’t in your circle of empathy.
I get that phobias are powerful, but fuck you for being so selfish to kill other peoples pets due to what you admit are unreasonable fears. Note you aren’t just killing dogs, you are advocating for shortening peoples lives too.
This morning I had an unfortunate event that I was eventually able to eliminate, albeit in pain.
/ had to
Okay, let’s just break this down.
You talked about killings done by shelters, of unwanted animals. Unless you’re claiming that shelters go out and kidnap other people’s pets? No? So no, you can’t rationally assume that my casual approval of shelters’ policies includes approval of the theft and destruction of other peoples’ property.
Oh, and dogs aren’t humans. Good lord. Next you’re going to say that swatting a fly is equivalent to the holocaust.
That’s a positive note!
And it’s better than that–the 1982 number is based on a population of 231M. Today that same 21K fatalities would scale to almost 30K if it were proportional to the US population, so unless I bungled the math, the scaled number of fatalities is about 1/3 of what it used to be.
Relatively few strays are reclaimed before being euthanized or adopted out to others.
Shelters with non-empirical based “pit bull” policies dramatically reduce the window of finding a lost pet.
And yes you are selfishly killing humans too.

While dogs don’t have the same emotions they do have emotions. I also worked at a vet clinic and personally know the look of terror with the typical euthanasia drugs. Euthanasia in veterinary private practice use the “two injection method” but shelters use a method that is known to be cruel to humans.
I don’t like cats because I am allergic and I fear polar bears and great white sharks but I am not advocating wholesale assassination.
Your stance is selfish. While I don’t have a “pit bull” I will do my best to have a leashed dog and to keep them from escaping, but I won’t suggest that millions of animals are destroyed to comfort my own fears.
Well gee that’s dashedly unfortunate - but wait, you just criticized them adopting the dogs out to others too! So what do you expect, then - that the shelters perform a nationwide manhunt for the original owner of every stray they find, presumably completely lacking contact information for said possibly-nonexistent owner?
Yeah, that’s totally reasonable.
And exactly equivalently I’m a mass murderer for failing to distribute bandaids to people who might, eventually, need one.
Oh, wait, no, that’s stupid. So no, I’m not “killing humans too”.
And at the risk of making you sound insane, we’re still talking about unclaimed dogs. These are dogs without owners to die for lack of their presence. ‘Oh, but they might have been adopted and thus granted an owner immortality!’ Except what happens if a person goes looking for a dog, and Dog A has been euthanized? They get dog B instead! To the best of my knowledge there’s not a massive dog shortage preventing people from getting all the dogs they want. Which means that the only people who don’t have dogs are the people who don’t want dogs.
Are you proposing forcing unwanted dogs on people in an attempt to increase people’s lifespans? I’d say “good luck with that”, except that might mean you’d give one to me, which would be a hellish experience for as long as it took for animal control to come claim it, or whoever I could get to come take away the nightmare beast scratching at the door I’d locked myself behind.
So argue for better euthanasia methods. Contrary to your wild imaginings about me, I haven’t said anything about hunting every single dog on the planet down and torturing them to death. I’m saying that if there’s an animal that nobody wants, I’m okay with humanely turning out its lights.
Guys? That rolleyes in post #3 is also a link to an existing anti-pit/anti-dog thread. Just sayin’.
Did you really expect people to click on the smilie with no explanation?:rolleyes:
I find it :dubious: that of all the horrible things mentioned in the OP, the thing that sparks the most outrage is the unjust accusation about dogs.
I’d say we add “irrational fear” to the list, what say you?
Most are important goals, one was an oddly specific statement made out of ignorance. (although I would rather just have moral Republicans vs eliminate them)
Someone needs to do something about all the killer golden retrievers attacking children in our streets.
