Back in 1995 I went DragonCon in Atlanta and got Harlan Ellison to sign my copy of The Illustrated Harlan Ellison. There were a couple of tense moments, one before he signed and one after. The first was because when I plopped it on the table he looked up at me and asked “Where did you get this?”
I told him that I had bought it at least 15 years ago, when I was a teenager. “Why do you ask?”
“Well, I’ve never seen it before. I didn’t know this even existed.”
The whole room goes quiet. Mr. Ellison is known for being very determined to always get paid for his work; he doesn’t tolerate theft at all. I was afraid for a second he was going to try and keep it! (He didn’t.)
So, yeah, it’s a book signed by the ‘author’ but prolly the only one in existence.
Back in the '90’s I was a fan of the now long-cancelled soap opera Another World. I even had a denim baseball jacket with the show’s logo embroidered on the back. One summer I was on vacation in London, and I saw David Forsyth, one of the actors from the show, walking down the other side of the street. I sprinted down the street, abandoning my sister (who is still annoyed with me over that), and caught up with him. I didn’t know what to say to him, so finally I just turned my back and said, “I’m wearing your jacket!” He looked very confused, and then realized that I was wearing a jacket from the show. He very kindly offered to sign it. I hadn’t even thought about asking, but one of us found a pen, and he signed the inside lining of my jacket. The jacket no longer fits, but I still have it tucked away somewhere as a memento.
