Whose autographs do you have?

I came upon these two threads about signed books & pictures (respectively), and, as a serious collector of autographs myself, I thought it might be interesting to get those balls rolling again in a single thread.

So what autographs do y’all have? Any other autograph collectors out there? Let’s here stories, see pictures, etc.!

My small contribution:

Geoff Chunn*, Eddy Rayner, Paul Crowther - of Split Enz
*on a signed letter in a Neil Finn lyric book, alas no Finn signatures…

Grant McLennan - late of Go-Betweens signed CD

Matt O’Donnell - Tarmac Adam, signed solo CD

Howard Jones - signed limited CD

John Taylor - Duran Duran, signed solo CD (but not Rio…)

Richard Dawkins - signed Greatest Show on Earth first edition

Harlan Ellison - signed paperback

Jean Auel - signed Shelters of Stone

My first three were Len Dawson, George Blanda, and Kenny Stabler, who appeared at “Conexpo '75” in Chicago, and signed promotional pics of themselves. Roger Staubach was supposed to be there too, but missed that day. Also, Evel Knievel was a day late, though I did see his rocket that fizzled over the Snake River Canyon.

My baseball glove was signed by Bruce Sutter, Rick Reuschel, Bill Buckner, Ken Holtzman, Ray Burris, Doug Flynn, Pat Zachry, and Joel Youngblood. Only Holtzman’s has stood the test of time.

On random sheets of paper I got Rusty Staub, Ed Kranepool, Chub Feeney, Karl Schmidt (the Signman at Shea Stadium), Art Shamsky, and I may even have Duke Snider, which strikes me now as a funny thing to be unsure of. Probably I don’t have it and maybe he wasn’t even there that day (Old Timer’s Day at Shea in '79). Roy Campanella’s wife signed “Roy Campanella” for me. Chico Escuela was in no condition to exercise his motor functions. Willie Mays’s I never got, either that day or when he lived across the street from me (but also thirty stories up, with an intimidating doorman between us).

In books that I bought second-hand, Bill Veeck and Alben Barkley.

I think I probably do have Duke Snider, now. I’ll let you know maybe in a few years, whenever I get a chance to open whatever box that stuff is in. Oh, and Sasha Cohen (the figure skater).

Ray Bradbury collected by a friend.

Bruce Campbell on a Burn Notice cast map/directions who was newly playing Sam Axe. I recalled him fondly as Ash in Evil Dead. His Burn Notice troupe was using our Catholic school as a staging area and canteen. I think he was surprised to have a pudgy old lady Catholic math teacher tell him how much she admired his work in Evil Dead. lol

I have a bunch of Pittsburgh Pirate autographs from 1993-1997. Really, one of the absolute WORST times to seek autographs for that team. Not a one recognizable if I listed them.

Meat Loaf signed my ticket for his Bat Out of Hell 2 tour. I very much enjoyed the show, and he was pretty nice to the fans afterwards.

I got a bunch at a convention one time. Adam West. Dave Prowse, who no one was really talking to, so I had so much time with him it actually got uncomfortable. Nice guy - to me and my girlfriend, on that occasion. I gave that picture to my nephew who loves Star Wars. I also got a cast picture of Night of the Living Dead signed by every living cast member, including the first zombie and George Romero. I only missed out on the lead, who died an early death in the 70’s. I gave that to my other nephew who loves horror movies. He totally geeked out. I guess that was my best autographed item.

I have a bunch of random autographs on a baseball from the 1994 All-Star fanfest I worked. Earl Weaver, Enos Slaughter, and a few more I can’t recall.

I have an autographed baseball from Harvey Haddix, along with an autographed baseball card that commemorated his 12-inning perfect game. Another nice guy, and probably my fav baseball autograph.

I also sent away a bunch of 2nd or revised edition Magic: the Gathering cards to have the artists autograph them. I have like 10 of them.

That’s about it. My autograph period corresponded with the period I dated a woman who was an autograph collector. I haven’t got a single one since, but I enjoyed meeting the people, however briefly.

IIRC, WordMan collects first edition books. Wonder if any were ruined by allowing the author to scribble upon them.

Alice Cooper, on the back of a biker jacket covered in Alice memorabilia. I was in the jacket when he signed it! :d

Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, of XTC, on a copy of Song Stories, a book about their music.

Mike Green, a hockey player. On a piece of paper.

Probably for the best if you admire him in any capacity–he has one of the worst reputations of the MLB HOF’ers when it comes to autograph collectors.

Duke Snider was one of the first ones I tried to get when I really started collecting (a little over 10 years ago). I did finally get one but I had a heck of a time trying, and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Somewhere between the book I had read that talked about how great he was with fans (written, interestingly enough, by a collector who had befriended him) & the point where I started collecting, his attitude toward fans/collectors apparently changed.

I got one of those myself about 2-3 years before he passed away. Unfortunately, it’s on a postcard that was mailed inside an envelope, so it’s creased pretty badly down the middle. There’s no replacing it now though–not with one that he signed just for me, anyway.

What was he like? I know his/his manager’s reputation, but the time I met him, he was nothing like it.

He’s another one whose reputation precedes him. I’ve never met him myself, but I’ve heard plenty of stories. Heck, he managed to get himself banned from signing at the SW Celebration conventions.

That is pretty sweet. Heck of a gift!

I’m actually doing that to my “lady friend” and bringing her in on the fun.

I had Douglas Adams sign a copy of his book Mostly Harmless.

As a kid I hung around the local rookie league baseball stadium. My mother was part of a non-profit group that ran the concession stands. I would slide down the embankment to the rear of the dugout and take orders from the players. I got several autographs and bits of memorabilia, most from players who never made the big leagues.

The two most recognizable who did make it big are Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry. I had Strawberry’s broken bat, signed, from his first professional hit, a double to right center field. My brother burned it years later for Og knows what reason.

Larry Bird on a Sports Illustrated
Brooks Robinson on baseball
Don Henley on his book

As a teenager, I wrote to Professor Tolkien.
I got a short polite typed reply signed by him.

I’ve since mislaid it…:smack:

Terry Pratchett - Hogfather with a “Ho! Ho! Ho!” signature.

Had a few moment’s chat with him, about how I’d basically used reading Good Omens aloud to the class on a geology field trip to hook my wife, which segued into our shared love of geology, and a good popular science book recommendation from him.

I was lucky enough to meet the artist Storm Thorgerson. He signed a copy of his book and one of his lithographs for me. He had a savage wit, the sort that some people thought was unkind at times. But, he had that twinkle in his eye that let you know that he was simply trying to pull you along into a different place.

I have the autographs of Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen and Clive Barker.

All four Ramones on Road to Ruin LP
All four Devo members on Are We Not Men? LP
Rene Belbenoit, author of Dry Guillotine (Devil’s Island escapee)
Bob Keeshen (Captain Kangaroo) biography
Maybe a dozen reference books lesser known authors

And a few I’ve recently sold off:
Sophie Tucker autobiography
Poul Anderson paperback
T-Bone Walker 8x10 still

Three players in Baseball Hall of Fame: Enos Slaughter and Red Schoendienst, in pencil, collected after a game on a scorecard, when I was 12. Also Gary Carter, on a baseball, collected by a friend at spring training.

I don’t intentionally collect autographs but have managed to accumulate a few in books and on envelopes:

Leni Riefenstahl

Eddie Rickenbacker

Arthur Goebel

Jefferson Davis

Col. Ethan Eaton

I have an autographed Al Stewart poster.

My wife’s uncle gave me a 1991 Redskins Press Guide filled with autographs of players and coaches from that team. Joe Gibbs, Art Monk, Charles Mann, Mark Rypien, Ricky Sanders, Darrell Green, to name a few. Got almost the entire team.

James Burke from Connections.

Mrs. FtG has Neil Young’s.

We don’t really do autographs.
