Earlier this month I got a Guy Harvey shotglass signed by him. He was doing a promo thing at Seaworld.
I have Dan Marino’s stacked somewhere at home. I wrote a “I’m your biggest fan” letter and got a signed picture. Based on the pen markings and the picture it actually looks legiit.
Bill Schroeder. He’s a relatively unknown wide receiver (unless your a Packers fan) but he’s my favorite football player ever. My family in Wisconsin met him and he signed some stuff and they gave it to me for Christmas.
Samuel R. Delany and Howard Chaykin both signed a copy of Empire for me.
I have several books signed by Christopher Moore and a copy of Rite of Passage with Alexi Panshin’s autograph.
There’s a double lettered limited edition hardcover copy for Swashbuckling Editor Stories signed by all the contributors.
I can only think of four personally signed for personally me:
Louise Harrison (George’s Mother): answered my 1964 teenybopper fan mail request with a glossy photo of The Fabs. I’ve since seen identical copies of the photo and “signatures” elsewhere, but on the back of mine Mrs. Harrison added a genuine “Best Wishes to (me)” note with her signature.
Jerry Mathers (The Beaver): met him at a meet & greet event
Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell): same event. They both signed the “Eddie Haskell Lives” tee shirt I wore that night.
Brian Wilson: glossy 8x10 with note thanking me for tuning/prepping his piano for a performance.
I have a baseball signed by Keith Hernandez, from back when he was still playing with the Cardinals.
David Letterman - When he was new to CBS(1993), you could mail them and they would send you a 8x10 picture of him signed. I think it is legit, though I guess he could have had guys signing for him.
Charles Barkley - When he was the with 76ers.
Isiah Thomas - I attended his basketball camp
Joe Dumars - Same basketball camp.
I have four:
A frisbee signed by local celebrities Big Chuck and Little John, after I appeared with them in a promotional for some good cause or another.
A festival program signed by legendary Irish singer Tommy Makem.
One of the Straight Dope books, signed by Cecil Adams, though I haven’t met him: I got it from one of the other moderators, who brought it out for me.
And a particle-physics textbook signed by David Griffiths, after he came to my school to give a colloquium.
Out of curiosity, did you see him sign it?
They’re pretty much regarded as genuine. He did the same throughout his time on “Late Night” (though perhaps a bit more selectively). Supposedly there was also a fax number for that purpose as well.
Leno (when he was at NBC) would send them out in response to emails.
Same item (as the STS-2 crew) or separate?
I picked up a Joe Engle from a dealer a couple months back, actually. It was slightly damaged, but the price reflected that, so it was a decent deal. I wanted to get one before the SpaceFest appearance artificially inflated the prices.
My dad used to love him back in the day.
Signed as Cecil?
Stephen King - random piece of paper
Penn and Teller (Teller does talk) - program
David Clayton-Thomas - autographed picture
Same item. I was on the Space Shuttle Support Team. STS-2 was my first mission. We received very nice certificates noting our participation, and Engle and Truly signed the ones for people who wanted them signed.
What’s the story there? Just happened to bump into him on the street?
I saw them give a talk in Chicago a few years back–hearing his voice while seeing his mouth move (he often talks when he conceals his face) was trippy.
Oh wow–any chance you have a picture?
Of the signing, or the certificate? Neither. I could scan the certificate, but I’d have to find it.
I was asking more about the signed certificate than the signing itself, though if you had pics of the signing, I wouldn’t object.
This is embarrassing: he was on tour, promoting “Firestarter,” (and “The Shining” movie) and gave a nifty talk at Johns Hopkins. It never occurred to me to take any books for him to sign (which he seemed to love doing), but I had a pocket notebook and he signed it. I made an off-hand SK reference about the can of beer in his lap (“Gray Matter”; if you’re a fan, you’ll know what I mean), and he responded with a joke and I thought I would die! Massive SK puppy love!
Better something than nothing–and it put you in a position for a great interaction!
He actually seems like a surprisingly cool, normal guy.
He’s coming to Chicagoland in September for his latest book, but, for quasi-obvious reasons, he’s not doing a live signing or meet & greet.
Jim Woodring sent me a nice note after I mailed him a newspaper clipping of artwork that reminded me of his.
Jim Lovell on his book.
Junior Brown on a shirt.
Dick Dale on a used guitar pick - fun story behind that one.
The Flying Karamazov Brothers in the 80s.
Various Red Sox from the 80s including Wade Boggs and Dwight Evans.
Did you meet him?
I never had the pleasure, but I did correspond with him briefly by email and he agreed to sign my book if I mailed it to him.
Unfortunately, in those days, I was dumb enough to send him a paperback. :smack:
I had hoped to get a hardcover and go see him give a talk in Chicago (and hopefully sign afterwards), but it was a perfect storm:
The bookstore mistakenly sent me a paperback instead of the hardcover I ordered.
To make matters worse, the paperback was written in (they also sold used, so I assume that’s what they sent) so I couldn’t have gotten it signed even if I wanted to.
Then, on top of all of that, the talk got cancelled a few days out with no intent of rescheduling.
C’mon–you can’t end with “fun story” and then not tell the story!
Oh, Teller talks, and he’s brilliant and interesting. Penn is the talker of the group, but Teller is vastly intelligent and is a pretty good lecturer. He used to be a teacher, I think.
