I am defending the right of people to have any political view at all. I am also defending the right of people to demonstrate for any political view without being violently attacked. The vast majority of the blame for the violence of yesterday, including all of the blame for what was by far the most violent single incident, should be placed at the feet of the white supremacists, not the counter-protesters.

They already know that other twisted, narrow, small minded people like them will find them. They’re not really doing their protests for information dissemination. What they want are (a) fearful local governments to violate their rights so they can get funding from the inevitable and justifiable lawsuit, and (b) counterprotesters to bring more attention to them, giving them–in their minds, at least–some veneer of legitimacy.

Do you know how to shut these idiots’ shrill stupidities down? Ignore their rallies and disseminate your own information in a legitimate manner. Do not give them the attention they crave. And certainly don’t help them look like victims.

I didn’t say started at the highes levels. The highest levels here has not vigorously come out against this. And since the Nazi supporters themselves are saying this is Trump’s promise made real, there is even a greater need for him to come forward.

The other reason he needs to come forward strongly is that the white supremacists were invoking his name and, apparently as a statement, dressing like him. So, in the absence of a strong denial, I’m going to assume that he’s affiliated with them on some level.

In addition to the messaging, Trump and his administration have advocated for a philosophy of escalation. How many times have we heard “If you attack him he’s going to hit back 10 times harder”. It’s like his prime directive. Does he really think he’s the only one allowed to react that way and that everyone else should respond proportionally?

This is not and has never been about speech we don’t like. Speech you don’t like is stuff like “Ghostbusters 2017 is a good movie.”

We are discussing speech that promotes evil actions. We’re talking about people who support genocide and murder and violence. The more we allow them to continue supporting these things, the more likely we have this one guy who drives his car into people. If enough people advocate for something, eventually someone will be a “true believer” and actually do it.

That’s the issue here. You can be a free speech absolutist all you want, but this lie that this is just about “suppression of speech we don’t like.” It’s about suppression of genuinely dangerous speech. As in, speech that leads to actual dangerous things happening.

Yes, there’s a slippery slope if you apply it to everything, but no one is. The proposed limit is on advocating for certain illegal acts of violence.

And this idea that limiting freedom of speech is inherently bad has to stop, too. There can and must be reasonable limits. We can discuss where they should be, but we cannot claim they shouldn’t exist, because that world (which we don’t live in) is a dystopia where you have false ads, people’s reputations destroyed, people killed by pranks, no perjury laws, no fraud laws, and so on.

I personally think it sounds like a good compromise: you can claim that a race is inferior, and advocate for policies that hurt them, but you cannot advocate violence towards them. Seems a good place we could all agree on. If not as a permanent goal, at least a step towards it.

And there is no obligation to virtue signal distaste or disagreement with any hateful ideology such as fascism, Nazism, communism etc when talking about tactics to influence others. Many in this thread expressed the desire that people are killed for holding a point of view. A few others think it’s better to promote a society that respects fundamental liberties for all. It’s very dishonest to paint those who are pro liberty as pro fascist and people are doing it in this thread for perverse reasons.
