"Unite the Right" white nationalist march: Ugliness on full display.

Thinking of The Sailboats and wishing Mrs Sailboat (and all others injured in this most awful of crimes) a swift recovery.

I’m off to cuddle my grandkids. Damn this world and what it’s become.

There’s a reasonable chance Sailboat’s wife is in not a good state. My thoughts are definitely with him.

I don’t think it’s surprising that Ryan condemned Nazis. It might seem like it sometimes to some folks but GOP does not equal Nazi.

These are NAZIS. Who doesn’t condemn Nazis? Well, other than the leader of the free world, I mean.

Oh no; I hadn’t seen how seriously the other 19 injured were hurt. Thoughts are definitely with all of those hurt and their families. I don’t have words.

Here’s a twitter thread listing Charlottesville area non-profits that would appreciate some help.

Sending my best to the Sailboats and peace to all of you.

Joining all the others who hope Mrs Sailboat is okay.

Cite? Or are you making that up to defend Nazis?

Someone posted somewhere else “that if it was a protest about heritage where were the museum curators and historians ? this “demonstration” was never about historical preservation… or not of the scholastic type anyways”

I wondered about that myself

Curators? You do realize that each person has their own point of view. What a symbol or whatever means to one is not a universal sentiment. Fascism is very dangerous, but I’m not sure why communism, which is just as bad and dangerous, gets a pass.

Speaking as someone with a graduate degree in history, not once did I ever learn anything related to the field by being told to look at or analyze statues.

Statues and monuments are things that represent the esteem or glorification of various things in a society. If those things are lost or destroyed, our understanding of history is not affected at all, because we get history from things books, records, and people. We know this is true because of the overwhelming multitude of things that are lost to history, but we still know about them I know of no statues of the Black Plague or Osama bin Laden, but every middle schooler can give you a pretty decent explanation of what they both mean. Or, in contrast, if the Church of the Holy Sepulcher were to disappear tomorrow, would Christianity be threatened?

Federal authorities have opened a civil rights investigation into the fatal car attack in Charlottesville, according to CNN.

In all honesty - you should go tell your professors that they failed at their jobs by not explaining to you that historical documents include statues, many of which have important inscriptions, and all of which have important things to say about a society and what it wanted to say about itself.

Our art - especially sacred and governmental art - reflects how a society sees itself and what official message we want to send about ourselves. The colossi at Abu Simbel, to pick an obvious example, are not just decorative; they’re a statement.

Similarly - the statues honoring the confederate generals put in place by the losing side are not mere ornamental bronzes. They are a statement that the Confederacy was honorable and worthy of respect, even though it lost the war it started in defense of slavery. The statues of the Confederate generals are the former Confederates’ way of show their allegiance to the Confederate cause, in the face of their lost slaves and way of life.

That’s why it’s important to move the statues to museums. It’s important to remember the events of the Confederacy - also to remember the persistence of allegiance to Confederate ideals, while no longer allowing that allegiance to exercise the power of its statement in a place of honor.

Sailboat, my thoughts are with you and your family.

As somebody who has put a lot of thought into the issue of memorializing Confederate icons and symbolism, I applaud you for holding this perspective. You said it better than anyone else has.

My guess: if he was truly threatened by protesters in the street, then he’ll say that he only stepped on the gas because he was under attack. By contrast, if he wasn’t at all threatened but just wanted to gleefully mow down innocents, then he’ll – say that he only stepped on the gas because he was under attack.

Sailboat I’m sorry this happened and I hope your wife turns out OK. I’m sorry I can’t think of anymore more comforting to say; I’m not good at this.

Working at a convenience store/gas station I once had a skinhead in a swastika t-shirt bitch at me about free speech when I refused him service. His got pretty mad because his car was low on gas and he didn’t think he could make it to another gas station. We were directly across the street from an Orthodox synagogue in a neighborhood that aside from the Jews is mostly black with a smattering of Hispanics. Oh, and yes he did threaten to “have my job”, but oddly I never heard anything afterward from corporate.

The only thing that’s surprising is that Donald Trump didn’t. I mean it’s not exactly surprising that he wouldn’t want to, but he’s is perfectly capable of lying through his teeth and saying stuff he doesn’t agree with without any sincerity because it suits a particular interest of his. But he couldn’t even do that. I’m going to stop now because anything that follows wouldn’t even be suitable for the Pit.

So we are all supposed to defend the rights of people chanting for the murder of Jews and non-whites. And we can’t criticize them on this board because reasons. This is all i gotta say about that.

Cite? I have no doubt there are despicable people in the world, but I think I missed the part where a crowd in Virginia was “chanting for the murder of Jews and non-whites”. Did that actually happen yesterday?

You can defend rights and criticize the message and the people. It’s not hard to do both.

Yes, I should certainly defend the rights of people who want to murder my family. Or, you know, not. Fuck Nazis and fuck the Klan.
