It would be hard to believe the cops don’t know the shooter’s identity by now. Think about how many people know your face; do you really think not one of them would sell you out?

Tends to happen in minority/impoverished communities where the residents/possible witnesses don’t trust the police, especially when “snitches get stitches” applies.
This seems to be more of a Ken McElroy kind of thing.

New theory. The supposed shooter was just a patsy. The real killer instructed and drilled him on how to clear a spent cartridge case and rechamber a new round. The gun was loaded blank, live, blank, live, blank, live. The blank rounds assured the gun wouldn’t properly cycle (not enough energy). The live rounds ejected confirmed to the shooter that he was doing things right. Meanwhile the real assassin is firing from some 300 yds away in a highrise under construction. He shoots when he see the puff from the blank - this matches the slight delay before the victim initially fell. This came to me in a dream - or maybe I saw it in a movie or a book but it fits; it’s airtight.
I think they’ve known who it was all along, but didn’t identify him because they didn’t want him to flee.
Turns out the backpack had nothing in it but Monopoly money.
If he draws a Get Out of Jail Free card, we’re screwed.
An “Advance to GO Collect $200” community chest card would’ve been a nice touch.

I’m reminded of the climax of The Batman where Gotham’s disaffected dress up in Riddler costumes and attack the people taking shelter in the arena after he blows up the seawall.
Hopefully there were fewer casualties at this event.
Nothing released is solidified yet, but the NYPD believes the shooter came to NYC on. Bus that originated in Atlanta.
There is an extreme leftist element in Atlanta where such an act could have taken shape. You may recall last year’s cop city situation: Atlanta had set aside some of its ever-shrinking natural woods as a preserve, then reneged and planned to build a huge world class law enforcement training camp. Protesters occupied the area in tents, and the state troopers, their body cameras shut off, shot a pepper grenade into one during a clearance operation. Claiming the protester inside shot back four times, he himself absorbed 57 bullets (more than 12 constitutes a “hail”). The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, as somehow separate part of the same state law enforcement organization as the troopers, found no error in the encounter.
Could there be a connection? I dunno. But revenge is a burning fire in the breast of the young and idealistic. And cowardice is natural to all humans, so a CEO heading to his continental breakfast is a better target than a trooper armed to the teeth.
