UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot in Manhattan [breaking news: 2024-12-04]

The alleged killer has a Youtube channel with a video set to show in 45 minutes. Or at least someone claiming to be him does. Not sure if I’m allowed to post the link?

This is a guy who seemed to have a lot going for him… high-school valedictorian, Ivy League education, family wealth. It’s kind of odd to square him with a health insurance CEO assassination. Curious to see what his real motivations were.

No, they were referring to the University of Pennsylvania, one of eight Ivy league schools, and most assuredly private at almost $70k tuition sticker price. (As has been stated before.)

An up and coming lawyer looking for national exposure, with a client lots of people like, who can spin pretty much any strategy they like, because the basic facts are so clear cut? I can see someone liking that. Out of all the lawyers in the land? Got to be a few, at least.

Or, maybe they have a lot of experience quickly finding info on social media, with great google-fu to find out more.

@PepMangione is his youtube channel

He’s severely mentally ill if his social media ramblings are any indication.

I wonder if Legal Eagle is licensed to practice in New York.

His youtube channel has been suspended so we won’t get to see the video. An earlier video was there that started out something like “if you can see this, I have been arrested” and then a countdown. Must have been on a deadman’s switch.

No doubt. But I think the number of lawyers who don’t want to become known as “the guy who tried to defend the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter, mounted a ridiculous defense for which he got scolded by the judge, and ultimately got his client a life sentence” will limit the available pool of willing defense lawyers.

In one sense, clearly yes, by definition. Normal people don’t go around assassinating the CEOs of companies they don’t like. But insanity as a legal defense is a much higher bar by design, and though his lawyers might try it for lack of any other defense strategy, there’s no way this will fly.

Is it? I can still refresh it. In fact, every time I refresh it the subscriber count goes up by a few hundred.

Yeah. Like most assassins, it looks like this guy is just a kook.

I gotta say, i’m disappointed. I figured someone who had lost a significant loved one; possibility a spouse, probably a child. But it seems like he’s just a radicalized kook.

Aaannd it’s gone.

His Twitter account had a photo of back surgery in the banner. I guess it didn’t go well…

If the former had been the case, and all other pertinent factors had been just right, he might have had at least a tiny sliver of faint hope for an insanity defense. But in the circumstances as they are, nope. He’s toast.

This one?

Obviously youtube had to suppress it. It could have been, for example, a call for action giving out the addresses of other CEOs.

I think some may have it cached in their browsers. It’s gone for me.

This is definitely a possibility, but it doesn’t seem enough that you no longer have anything to lose, even if you were screwed over by your insurance company. I’m assuming Brian Thompson didn’t break his back with a baseball bat.

On this date in 1893, an anarchist detonated a bomb in the French Chamber of Deputies. A satirical poet and anarchist polemicist, Laurent Tailhade, on hearing the news, famously quipped “What do the victims matter if the gesture is beautiful?”. Not long afterwards Tailhade was dining in a Paris cafe when it was bombed by another anarchist. Tailhade was maimed in the attack, losing an eye.

Yep. Gone now.
