I can’t find it now, perhaps because it’s finally been changed, but up until fairly recently New York state law dedicated an unusual amount of space in its athletic code to delineating the rules of tag team wrestling - I.e. a theatrical event that is not a real sport.
That dates back to the common law principle that the royal superior courts gave final decisions, unless a statute provided for an appeal. They were supreme in their decisions.
The terminology continues in Canada. The highest trial courts in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories are the Supreme Courts.
Never heard of him; disappointed that he has a full head of hair
Also, he folded like a cheap suit when the cops approached him. I read that he was visibly shaking when the cop asked him if he was in NY recently. If he was able to sell the, “No, I haven’t been to NYC” & gave a real ID it wouldn’t have even blipped on anyone’s radar. Even if he were a professional assassin & planed everything perfectly & got rid of all evidence it’s easy to sit behind a keyboard & say you would have been calm & cordial when they questioned you; there are many examples of people freezing or doing something wrong/inappropriate when put into a highly stressful situation for the first time.
Does it, though? Reports were that he took a bus to NYC from Atlanta. He came from the South but left to the West. I bet there were a lot of police resources looking at surveillance in the wrong places. Altoona has a population of 40,000-some thousand people. Hardly a huge city but definitely large enough that a newbie doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb like he would in a town of 100.

Well, from what I understand, he came into NYC on that bus, though (at least before he was arrested) authorities did not know exactly where he’d gotten on. And, they at least initially believed that he had gotten onto another bus, bound for Atlanta, when he apparently left Manhattan immediately after the shooting.
We’ll probably eventually learn what his travels were in the days that followed, but I imagine he got back off that bus, and then somehow did wind up in Pennsylvania, possibly taking one or more buses to wind up there.
Indicted for one count of first degree murder, which from the prior discussion here is unusual in New York. Plus two counts of second degree murder, including a terrorism charge, and a bunch of weapons violations. Also one charge for criminal possession of a “forged instrument”, which I assume is the fake ID. Alvin Bragg does not play. Is it normal to charge someone three times for one murder?
Yes. The goal is to find some legal cubbyhole this set of facts fits.
Net of the vagaries of what the judge and/or jury will buy.
Not unusual in these circumstances - there’s a charge of first degree murder in furtherance of an act of terrorism , second degree murder as an act of terrorism ( under a completely different section of the penal law) and “ordinary” second degree murder. It’s common to have multiple charges like this when the same behavior fits multiple statutes - there’s really only one conviction and sentence in the end.
He should have listened to I Have Not Been to Oxford Town (perhaps better known under the modified title/lyrics I Have Not Been to Paradise, as heard in Starship Troopers):
…I have not been to [NYC]
All’s well
…I have not been to [NYC]
He could have gotten off scot free (for another day, at least).
Haven’t seen this posted elsewhere : Mangioni is now facing federal charges.
Still waiting for the Hague and the Intergalactic Federation of Planets to weigh in.
You can shoot up a school full of children or target innocent worshippers in a church, but that isn’t terrorism. For some reason.
I’m pretty sure a number of the various shootings at houses of faith would qualify as terrorism in a general sense, but the laws seem to rule very narrowly that in order to do so the crimes must be “politically motivated” as opposed to the (sadly) much more common racial/religious hate. Which is somehow not “political” even though many explicitly intend it to start a race war which, IMHO, is inherently political as well as a hate crime.
Makes sense. He killed one of the ruling elite.
How often is the mayor of New York City personally present for the transport of extradited suspects?
The mayor who, if there’s any justice, will spend years in prison for his own crimes
How will they find a jury to convict him?
Particularly if the ‘tried federally’ plan works out and the death penalty is called for by the federal prosecutors.
It’s said that being charged for the (essentially) same crime by both a state and the federal government is extremely rare. Possibly a jury would take that into consideration.
Oh wait… I can think of another difference.
Judas finked on a guy who many feel is the epitome of goodness and love and the son of god. Whereas the McD’s employee called in a tip that led to the arrest of a murderer.
Big big big difference.
Well, I’m sure that Luigi has friends who say nice things about him, too.
