Unjust August (Mini-Rants)

I have norovirus!

Really sucks because my son is starting kindergarten tomorrow and we were supposed to meet his teacher tonight. My husband is taking the boy without me. This is such a big deal. I’m bummed. I’m also going to miss taking him to his first day of school.

I’m also hungry AF. I have a real hard time not eating even though I know it’s gonna make me sick. But right now I can’t even hang onto water. So I sent my husband for Gatorade (electrolytes if nothing else) and crackers. Trying to make the best of it. Playing the shit out of Slay the Spire today. Still getting my ass handed to me. Sigh.

that is weird, can you visit another eye dr for a second opinon? My cataracts were pretty bad…i could no longer read street signs but i could always read my books and computer. Maybe you are farsighted?
Now I am farsighted and have to wear glasses to read anything but man the street signs and even planes are very clear especially since the corrected for my astigmatism.

If FEDEX (with whom the USPS does have an ongoing commercial relationship) hands the package to the USPS then the Change of Address system can fine a more current address most of the time.

TBH, I don’t care if they return it to Chewy, contact USPS to get a better address, or throw it away. I just don’t want to do any of their work for them.

I’m very sorry that you are suffering through this. Our household had this earlier this summer and it Sucked.

“Hey, you want to lose that 20 lbs that you’ve always wanted to..?
Watch this neat Norovirus Trick… and then… blow it out your ass…!”

I second this opinion. While I’ve heard of lots of people having to wait for their cataracts to “ripen”, that doesn’t make sense if they are impairing your vision. Mine were impairing the vision in one eye and I was scheduled for surgery immediately after diagnosis.

And I was in my 50’s, which I gather is relatively young for a cataract patient….i gathered that based on the fact that everyone else in the waiting room was way older than me, and when I went to check in they told me I couldn’t check in for my mother.

I’ve got a 2003 Olds that’s in “could strand me on the side of the road any day now” mode. (I’ve joined AAA just for the towing…)

I often drive 2 hours to my mom’s to take her to appointments. But now we’re down to ZERO cars that we can depend on to make the trip…

… because the other car, the one we could count on, suddenly had Check Engine (and Traction?!?) lights come on, and started misfiring, and now the brakes are acting weird.

The code reader says it’s the turbocharger. Which is a “Known Problem” with Buicks, and those newer than ours have had recalls.

We trust our local mechanic a lot more than the dealer, but it’s a three week wait for either of them… and a thousand or two “depending how much needs to be replaced”.

First day of school here was today. I’m pretty sure that’s a violation of the Geneva Convention! I could see maybe if Labor Day was the 6th or 7th but it’s the freakin’ first of the month; it can’t possibly come any earlier.

Yesterday I drove past the local elementary school at about 2:30. The line of cars blocking the road to pick up the pwecious dawlings was already 3 blocks long. That school lets out at 3:15.

Yep, school’s in session. Uggh.

And yesterday I had my first “Locked myself out” event. Keys in hand, but since I was just going to get my mail I forgot I needed my phone, and that after the installation the door locks behind you automatically. I had the 7 digit code written down in my wallet, which was also in the apartment. Had to get a neighbor to call my daughter (thankfully I remembered her number) to give me the code. New code is now in my wallet, in my car, and all my daughters have it as well.
It would be so much better if you could pick your own code, but all you can do have them generate a new 7 digit code for you.

Tattoo time?
If it was me, I’d move out of any place that required my phone to go outside. Most systems that I’ve seen can be either a fob or phone; they won’t/can’t give you a fob?

Can you get an aftermarket one made? @LSLGuy, how did you get your ring made?

Off topic - what are Naval standards for sobriety?

Be glad you don’t live in Tennessee. Schools been in for two weeks. On the bright side, we get out in May, before the weather is sweltering.

I actually joked about a tattoo. No fob, you have to use either the app or the 7 digit code. And I am moving in a month, not related to this.

It’s a line from one the Aubrey/Maturin novels set in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars. Given that the daily rum ration was 8 ounces, the implication of the saying was “Not very sober.”

I’ve already answered that…

Schools here traditionally start the Tuesday after Labor Day, when Labor Day was late, they would occasionally start a couple of days before, but still in Sept. There is just no reason for them to begin this week. Even the pool was closed (at least yesterday) between the college-aged lifeguards back & kids in school during the day.

The management company doesn’t need to know that; tell 'em the new system sucks & that’s the reason your moving.

Agree. Around here public scools must start after Labour Day, the exact date being up to local boards. Most schools start Sep 2 this year. I think also that the school year ends a little later in the US.

Last day is June 12th here. They also have this Friday off because having a three-day weekend isn’t enough with Monday’s Labor Day holiday

* if it was any other poster, I’d call you out for the unnecessary ‘u’ in Labor; however, I’m just impressed that a dog has such typing skills.

I am plagued by two public schools (well, “public” and “Catholic”) side by side on the main road between my house and the shopping area. It’s a madhouse of traffic between around 2:30 to 3:30 in the afternoon as the Little Darlings get picked up. Somehow this always ends up being just the time I’m going to or from shopping. It would be a lot worse except most of the little hellions manage to walk home.

I’m hoping to miss that mess most days as Wee Weasel has an after school program and I won’t be picking him up until 5pm. That after school thing is a godsend. I hope when the state radically slashes our education budget, we won’t lose it.

It does make no sense to start before labor day. And since he has Friday off and only had a half day today it makes the week super wonky.

He is home now, seemed to have fun on his first day. I asked him if he had story time and he said that’s only on full days. At least I know he’s paying attention.

Apparently I was mistaken. The last day of school in Ontario is, again, determined by school boards, but for most schools it will be June 25 2026. Curiously, this is a Thursday. Perhaps so that teachers can use Friday to clean up after the little hellions before themselves departing for the summer.

So this year, at least, schools start one week later than in the US but end two weeks later.
