From the article, I think the logic is that bike lanes and rainbow crosswalks are confusing to drivers. As usual, there is a kernel of a point they’re using to form the bigotry: the more the variety of signs (in the semiotic sense), the more brain space needed to process the visual noise at speed. What they’re not mentioning is that this is a negligible increase that humans are quite capable of, and that the varied visual clutter from advertising is far more distracting than two clear but newish ways of painting roads.
I’ve seen the same argument used a lot against bilingual signage, where it is also a fig leaf covering bigotry.
I had a wee bit of a tantrum today at work in the law library of the courthouse while negotiating the outcome of particular child welfare case. This was the second case I had that morning and had been there for a couple hours waiting in the legal line up.
The case is currently assigned to a young woman I am supervising who has demonstrated great difficulty in the workplace. She’s getting a little better but it’s one of the most difficult situations I have been confronted with in many years.
Another supervisor and I started discussing the transfer date to one of her caseworkers for ongoing services.
She was obnoxious and unreasonable and we argued a bit.
I couldn’t take it anymore and slammed the manila folder with paperwork onto the table. All of the papers went flying as if hit by a windstorm and I left the building. Just had it.
No harm done but I’m thinking it does reflect some personal and professional stress I need to work on a bit more.
On a positive note I did not use any F words except “fine”.
In the last week, I’ve lost a small pair of scissors and a salad fork. They just vanished. I’m wondering if I should keep a closer eye on my cats. I don’t think I’ve pissed them off but you never know.
We have a complete multi hundred post thread on how the editor has been changing over the last month. We don’t need another one.
The very short version:
At the upper left of the edit box to the left of the [B] button is a slide switch. It says either “A” or “M↓”. Click it to change between the two modes.
“M↓” mode is the old familiar one which has a separate preview box so you can see how the various codes and such that you’ve typed will appear in the finished product.
The new “A” mode is fully WYSIWYG. There is no preview because what you’re typing is what will be displayed. And as a side effect, that mode automatically includes extra vertical whitespace between paragraphs. Not between lines, which is what “double-spaced” means.
You can switch back and forth at any time during a post. And whatever setting you last used will be in effect the next time you start a post. My general technique is to try to use new “A” mode most of the time and only switch back to the more primitive “M↓” mode when I need to fiddle with secret codes to do fancy formatting.
Just like we used to do back in the WordStar and WordPerfect for DOS days with the “reveal codes” button (F11 IIRC)
I have a Z-Flip 4, which I love. This morning, it started shutting down when I close it. It only seems to power up when it’s plugged in. I’m guessing there is a loose connector in there somewhere. This is what phone insurance is for. Unfortunately, because this phone is a replacement phone, there are now two Z-flips on my Asurion account, and I do not which is the correct one, so I’m going to have to go to the Asurion store and mix my yoga class.
I’m working on two federal grants in 2 weeks, and last Wednesday my CEO told me she and the tech company were taking care of the narrative and would have it to me Monday. I thought wow, I only have to write one narrative now, great. So I wrote that one and sent out the draft today and she loved it, etc.
Today re: the other grant, my CEO is all, “oh, I’m not writing the *narrative,” just the content.”
Okay, fine, content. Where is it?
Grant’s due in four days, and I don’t have the slightest clue what we’re doing for it.
I can’t with this shit.
Look, I’m going on vacation Saturday whether it’s in or not. I cannot play this fucking game.
I am sorry but I have not kept up with the hundred post thread you mention. I am not even sure I would comprehend everything being discussed without some side research.
I am still working full time and my online forays are fairly limited.
I only mentioned it because I thought it was a bit odd that my post spacing appeared to change recently.
It’s not a big deal and I can live with it.
I went through your instructions and now I understand what is going on.
I never thought to look at the A and B letters.
I thought the A and B buttons were for capitalizing letters.
I had no idea they were function keys.
And yes I remember the DOS days. I had a function key insert I kept on my keyboard for a long time.
