My wife had our first baby last month.
It is amazing being a father, but that’s
not the subject here
The sleep has been interrupted. I work out of a home office, and the nature of my work allows me to work off hours, although I am
expected to be available during normal business hours. Here’s the thing; I notice
strange things about my job performance when I work in the middle of the night or work during the day on less sleep. For one, my memory is MUCH better. My writing vocabulary seems more forthcoming as I write. I think I even talk better…
I usually sleep about 7-8 hours a night.
I notice that when I get 5 or 6 hours, I
still need to drink coffee or mountain dew to get started, but not more than one cup. I just seem to impress the hell out of myself for the whole day after.
When I work in the middle of the night, I do not use any caffiene but my head seems hyperactive yet controlled.
Is there any correlation between lucid thought and stress levels?
I know what you mean. There have been periods in my life when I am ‘running on adrenalin’ and have produced some outstanding work. Something about a lack of sleep and a sense of being ‘on edge’ seems to heighten the intensity of one’s attention or something. It’s like suddenly being able to use an extra portion of your brain.
For me, I have found this to be only a periodic state. And in recent years, it seems to have disappeared entirely.
Second, after having 2 kids, I am the same way. I used to go to bed religiously at 9:00 every night until I had kids. Now I stay up until 11:00 or 12:00 and get up at 5:30 and still function as well as I ever did. I have experienced the “stoned profound revelation syndrome” a couple of times though. Usually after I’ve been up for 20 hours and had a couple of drinks though! Doesn’t happen often!!
