I saw a new flag on a flagpole at a house near my home the other day. New to the house, and new to me.
Imagine the US flag, except with the blue field with stars area being completely black, and the red and white stripe area being completely white. No words, no designs, just that black square in the upper left corner of a white rectangle.
I’ve googled a bit, but have found no similar images.
The folk in my area are pretty strongly conservative Calvinists, and this particular home in the past has displayed signs and posters with conservative messages, both politically and culturally.
I’m starting to think that it may be an example of someone flying the Christian flag over the American flag, as I found a lot of info on that phenomenon online. Along with a few Christian flag pics where the blue square was so dark it looked black, and the red cross was so deeply maroon it was hard to see on the dark field.
Now I’ll have to take a closer look next time I pass it. And see if there’s an American flag present.
It would fit the area, where Church does take precedence over Country.
I got a good look at it today in decent bright sunlight, and it was the Christian flag with a very dark navy blue canton (thanks, DSY) and a very very dark maroon cross inside that. That’s why I thought it was a solid black canton when I first saw it towards evening with overcast skies.
According to the rules of heraldry, they should have a white or yellow border around that cross. And this is a good example of why that rule was created: it makes the symbol visible from a distance.
I’m curious what Calvinist means in this context. Something more than just Presbyterian and UCC, I take it. Evangelical Reformed churches? Non-denominational?
