Upcoming Earthsea miniseries

Arg. I don’t know about this “it’s just an adaptation” stuff. The fact that the Kargs were white and the rest of the Archipelagans were black, copper-skinned, or whatever, was a big part of the books: it’s one of the major reasons why the two groups (and their representatives, Ged and Tenar) see each other as barbarians.

…Dinnertime!

It’s been about 20 years since I read the books and honestly don’t remember much about them.

I’m having trouble downloading the site. When does the series start?

Monday the 13th, at 9. I think that’s eastern. It’s at 8:00 in central time.

This was always my mental picture as well. I’ll probably watch the mini-series, but I’m not feeling optimistic – I’m not at all sure that the language can be divorced from the story in the way it would have to be for a movie. Even if it were a faithful adaptation, which this doesn’t look to be. They are the most beautiful books… I tell people they are prose that sounds like poetry. Books that beg to be read aloud. So I’m betting the mini-series will suck. Or, more accurately, I will think that it sucks because I loved the books so much and I’ll resist the changes. I’ll make my husband (who hasn’t read the books) watch it with me. And I’m sure I’ll be re-reading the books again afterward.

I agree that the languages Le Guin uses is beautiful. Of course we won’t know until the mini-series premiere if they use it in the adaptation, but I imagine that they would try. Language like Le Guin’s really adds to the “otherwordly” sense in Fantasy novels, IMO.

I was very impressed by the camerawork and scenery in the trailers. I hope that this is consistent throughout the mini-series - it looks like they created a very beautiful world.

So er…according to some interpretations here the good guy might be Arab looking and the baddies Caucasian looking.

Then follows a lot of wondering why the producers decided they would change that…
