(bolding mine)
I know this has been asked countless times before but I expect a few more have sprung up since then and the pay status of this board may have triggered a few finds from many dopers.
One other that I view (not so much post, as it’s mostly spamming, the more serious your post the more bizare and pointless the response) www.genmay.com
P.S. why does that word (patronize) have the two very different meanings?
I’ve never posted there, but I’ve been linked to it once in a while, and damn that’s one funny place. Well, depending on your sense of humor it is. One of the guys from my own site had a brother who committed suicide, and for some reason he posted about it there. They pretty much ripped him a new one, saying stuff like he (the poster) should have joined him, etc. Pretty funny though if you have a sick sense of humor.
I visit the forums at Ars Technica once in a while, as they’re a source of a lot of good technical information, and they have a pretty large gaming community there. The only problem is that they use Infopop software to run the board, and it’s broken constantly. Technical difficulties keep me away from some sites.
Disorganization keeps me away too. I’ve tried, but I just can’t get into the communities at Salon.com, despite the fact that I love the site (I’ve been a subscriber there since they started doing subscriptions). I’ll flip through and read on occasion, but I’ve never posted.
Aside from that, I go to a couple of Christian messageboards and try not to get banned for being a liberal.
nasioc.com. . .that’s north american subaru imprezas owner’s club.
it seems to mostly be asian 18 year olds that drive WRX’s with daddy’s money and think they made some improvement to their car by changing the clock from green to red.
and they mostly don’t seem to know how to drive stick.
but, there is some real good information there.
occasionally rec.games.chess.misc
I’m a member of the Urban75 Message Boards.
It’s a British site similar in many ways to SDMB, but smaller and also considerably more leftist in its orientation. (I know that will shock the hell out of some people who think that the Dope is the furthest left that any Board could possibly be).
I haven’t actually posted very much there, but i do lurk quite a bit. I guess that maybe the reason i don’t post there as much, especially on political issues, is that so many people on that Board share my positions on so many issues. I prefer to come here and mix it up with people who disagree with me.
I visit three mostly dead message boards on ezboard.com. The busiest of the three, which I co-administrate, gets about 40 posts a day and is home to maybe a dozen people, at most. We’ve been together for three years and half a dozen different boards so we’re fairly close though.
And if it counts, livejournal.com. The SDMB has a nice subsection over there and I’ve gotten to know a lot of Dopers better there than I ever would have here.
I play a multiplayer game called Space and frequent their forums.
And of course, it’s wholly informal and unaffiliated with the site itself [/disclaimer]
Almost forgot:
I’m also a member of G’Dope, the downunder SDMB spinoff group. Although, to my embarrassment, i haven’t posted there in quite a long time.
Many forums on Delphi.
A few forums on About.
The ATAonline.com message board.
The ATATKD group on Yahoo.
alt.callahans.
Expert’s Exchange.
and a few others that I visit on an infrequent basis.
I post to matrixowners (since I own a Toyota Matrix) and I’ve been a much older member of caranddriver.com.
I read slashdot and ars technica. Fairly recently, started reading somethingawful.
TiVo Community Forum - TiVo Owners
Televison Without PityReally snarky TV discussion site
I have a few others in my address book but haven’t visited them for awhile.
I used to be on BIX. Was anyone else there?
Seconded. Possibly thirded, as I stopped right here before I read the rest of the thread. I love SA.
Not all forums, as such, and on some I mainly lurk:
B3TA.com
clubpacs
auntminnie.com
wood.com
othercrap.com
somethingawful.com
I post regularly at TheSmartMarks, intermittently at TheMat.com’s forums and patronizingly in every sense of the word at ProWrestling.com’s boards.
I pay for this board, SomethingAwful and Totalfark. These 3 are everything I seem to need on the internet…worth paying for. Anything else I could imagine I needed on the internet are easily covered by those three.
BTW, I have no idea why Fark costs $60 a year and this site is rends so much more. I wouldn’t give either up though.
www.gaiaonline.com - I’m such a consumer.
I lurk on TWoP’s forums, but very infrequently. I’m much more likely to go read an old episode description/synopsis than hang around the forums.
I’m registered at a free forum for people who live in my town (and the neighboring one), but I haven’t posted there lately because it’s become one giant political argument spearheaded by a stubborn, paranoid, trolling, pain in the rear. The two other current threads are about gardening issues, which I have no interest in.
I was sort of a regular at My Boot, until it suddenly (and recently) went bye-bye. Perhaps Craig posted a warning of some sort that I missed before the site went down, but I find it all quite disturbing.
Surprisingly, my Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology is of no help here, but my guess is that they’re really not all that different: if you are someone’s patron – that is, you provide them protection and/or financial support (like a father, or pater) – you are in a better position than them. So the “condescending” definition most likely came from those patrons who confused ‘better position’ with ‘better,’ while the “customer” definition came from the financial support.
Well, I’m a geek, through and through, so with the exception of this board, they are all tech sites that I belong to.
Too many to list, but mainly:
Windows BBS
and Virtual Dr
