Upgrading a notebook computer

I was wondering–how hard is it to upgrade components in a notebook computer. For example, if I wanted to add RAM or change video cards down the line, is it possible?

Thanks in advance.

RAM yes, usually. Video, no.

Basically, a notebook is at least semi-proprietary. The video card is pretty much always on the motherboard, meaning that you can’t upgrade it. You can usually add RAM, up to the amount the motherboard supports (same thing with a desktop machine).

Hard drives, CD Drives, etc. can usually be added or changed, but not always. It depends on the notebook you buy.

What else? Sound cards are usually built in and can’t be changed. I’ve never heard of anyone swapping out motherboards, either, although in theory it could be done if you found the right motherboard. I’m guessing most manufacturer’s don’t make them available, though.

You can add more ram or a HD but that’s about it. You look at the manual of the computer & it gives you an idea what you can change. I saw at Office Depot 128meg ram simms for laptops for $5 after rebate. This means you can put in more but chances are they come with more than enough now.

What about the cpu or the possibility of overclocking?
