I’m having a devil of a time keying out a plant I came across this week in Wisconsin. I’ve tried Newcomb’s, Audubon, and a few other guides, and have spent a lot of time on line looking up Wisconsin wildflowers, etc. The plant is distinctive enough that I’m surprised I can’t seem to find it in any books. What is the best way to establish a link to a picture I took of it, so that the teeming masses may lead me out of my quandary? Do I have to register on one of those picture hosting sites like Flickr or some such? Does the SDMB have a method of hosting a picture? How do I do this? Thanks, dopers.
It’s a sedge, not a grass. Sedges are shaped like a triangle when you roll them between your fingers, grasses are round.
So, I wanted to get in first, now I’m going to try and find the species name.
I think I’ve got it, based on how the male flowers (that thin brownish plume) stick out of the female green unripe fruit stem: Carex lepidocarpa.
Or an America cousin of it, anyway.
Excellent. I think I’m going with C. grayi because of the overall appearance of the cluster of pistils (?) and the spike of male flowers. I did think it might be a sedge, but I didn’t really know the distinction between sedges and grasses. Thanks to all. Is this a great website, or what. xo, C.
google for gardenweb. They have a plant identification section. They are incredibly quick, and in my case, incredibly depressing. (Japanese Knotweed)
I was thinking Star Fruit.
