Finally! After years of looking, after finding (but not buying) lots of overpriced bootlegs, I’ve finally got a copy of Urgh! A Music War. A nice legitimate copy in excellent condition. Playing it right now. I’ve got to make a back-up copy of this, just in case my VCR decides to eat it someday.
That was some great music back then. I haven’t heard anything like Klaus Nomi recently. Devo. The Cramps. Surf Punks. It makes me want to be young again.
Ha! I remember going to see Urgh! A Music War at the Van East Cinema in the eighties. Then ran everything from classic films to experimental and alternative cinema. At the time, tickets were only a dollar for seniors, and it was pretty common to see several elderly people who were there just to get in out of the weather.
I remember looking over several times at a row of old women in the back, transfixed by a shirtless Lux Interior jamming his mike into those tight little leather pants that barely covered his junk, and then fellating it while continuing to vocalize.
I often wonder if they were as appalled as I assumed they must have been, being just a callow youth and utterly unaware of the concept of horny old women. They stayed until the end, anyway.
I can’t believe how much I remember of that show–we used to rent a bootleg Betamax tape of it back in the early 80s. Athletico Spizz 80, Klaus Nomi, and if memory serves, didn’t Alexi Sayle do a routine on there?
I’m quite jealous.
Now, if you come across a copy of the Pinned Records album “Vancouver Complications,” circa 1978 (a Vancouver punk anthology), let me know!
Perhaps ironically, there was a very strong Punk scene ‘Behind The Orange Curtain’ back in the day. ISTR a lot of good clubs being closed down in the late-1980s though.
Newport Beach, eh? I was at a party once, back in my 20s, and I asked my friend about a girl who was there. ‘So, do you think I have a chance?’ He said, ‘Let me put it this way: It’s a good thing you’re driving a Porsche. She’s from Newport Beach.’
I found a VHS copy a couple of years ago, and I still like to play it every once in a while (ffwd button in hand for the rare acts that suck like Invisible Sex).
Another Urgh! performance that is great… The Fleshtones doing Shadowline. If I’m not mistaken, they’re coming to town next month. Hell yeah!
Would love to get both videos - Urgh! A Music War and Liquid Sky.
I have both LP’s but try not to play them much to keep them in good nick.
Urgh! was where I first got turned on to Toyah
