Just to update this thread… I mentioned the canned cherry pie in a recent video and a kind viewer sent me this link:
(the listing says ‘frozen’, but the product range was definitely fully canned, shelf-stable pies - and this is confirmed by the writing on the can)
This isn’t the exact product I remember - it was more of an up to date style of printing and styling, but I think this product might be the predecessor of the one I remember
Missed this the first time around. But I think I’ve eaten one of these.
I seem to remember I bought one as a novelty back in the eighties. As I recall, it was pretty much what you would expect. A basic crust (moist rather than flaky) with the kind of cherry pie filling you normally get in a can. Not terrible but also not great. Think of it as the equivalent of a Hostess fruit pie.
