US Open (golf) Pool

Toms $40
Mallinger $30
Baddeley $30

I just dropped 5-spot on Davis because of the odds. He’s been struggling for some time, but has knocked at the door on occasion. While I highly doubt he’ll win or even seriously threaten, I thought he might be in the top 5 after one of the rounds.

Incredibly, the guy who has won the last two PGA Tournaments at Pebble Beach, Dustin Johnson was not picked by any of the 14 entrants.

Here is the list of players that were not picked by any entrant (with their odds).

Dustin Johnson 40/1
K.J. Choi 50/1
Robert Karlsson 50/1
Ben Crane 50/1
Hunter Mahan 50/1
Stewart Cink 66/1
Martin Kaymer 66/1
Nick Watney 66/1
Zach Johnson 66/1
Graeme McDowell 66/1
Robert Allenby 80/1
Y.E. Yang 80/1

Weir is a bit of a flier pick, but he has done well in several US Opens, and where he’s had trouble recently is with having a bad round or two each tournament, rather than just consistently poor play. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for him to put up an excellent score in one of the first couple rounds, such as he did last year.

Having said that, I don’t think anyone would be too surprised if he just missed the cut.

Damn it I thought about going with Choi too. I wonder what made me skip him.

I thought Choi would be picked, I even listed him as an example in how I calculate the payback.

That list of players that were not picked were the players with the shortest odds, that were not picked.

A lot of “longshot” players were not picked. A lot.

You got my last minute e-mail saying to put it all on Cabrera-Bello, didn’t you?

Where’s Justin Rose?

Justin Rose didn’t qualify. The US Open does not exempt PGATour winners. At the cutoff date he was not in the top 50 in the world rankings.

Dinsdale, No, did not receive an email. Sorry about that, Chief.

I have the standings after round 1 posted after the SDMB nightly poker game. Come and join us. 10 pm edt.

My man Weir is one shot off the lead. Go Mikey!

Strange round 5 bogies and 6 birdies.

Standings after Round 1. I am kind of tired tonight, if you see an error, please tell me.

I couldn’t remember if I had picked Casey or not. Will be interesting to see who does what today and tomorrow. Pretty amazing for neither Tiger nor Phil to score a single bird!

Early on Friday nobody’s lighting it up. Scores look pretty similar to yesterday’s. Weather looks pretty consistent thru the weekend.

I predict -5 will win the tourney. Anyone else?

Oh yeah - just to further entertain myself here - the cut is top 60 + ties.
If 2 of my guys (Mick and O’Hair) get moving, I might have a whopping 8/10 plaing the weekend…

Frickin Casey - a SNOWMAN?!

Dinsdale, the cut is top 60 and ties, or anyone within ten shots of the lead. If no one runs away with the lead today, I expect the 10-shot rule to be the cutline rather than the top 60.

I expect 1 under to be leading. That means anyone at +9 or better makes the cut. Currently there are 142 players at plus 9. By the end of the day, I would not be surprised if +9 or better has 80-90 players.

Thanks for the correx.
