US OPen (golf) thread

Any interest?

Well, I picked Kuch, Furyk, Stallings, and Schwartzel. As usual, my main pick is ABT!

Will be interesting to see what happens on this relatively short course. Will have to see how hard the storms that moved through IL/IN yesterday hit the area. And what is the deal with those stupid baskets? :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow - even less interest than generally around here for golf threads! :stuck_out_tongue:

This rain delay is weird. Folk seem to be teeing off for rd 2, before everyone has finished the first round. Which seems to be at odds with the general practice of swapping order of teetimes from rd 1 to rd 2. Not readily finding an explanation of what they are doing.

Also, since the pool I’m in depends on rd-by-rd standings, it is going to be tricky to figure out what the standings are after the 1st rd. Should be clearer after rd 2 if the weather holds.

Sure looks like a neat course - tight, and not surrounded by mansions as most elite courses are. And that is some rough!

But I guess I’ll share any further thoughts with folk who care!

They do swap the morning/afternoon waves of tee times for round 2, but the players stay in the same positions within their own waves. For example, in round 1, David Toms was in the first group of the afternoon wave off tee 1. So in round 2, he swaps to the morning wave on the back nine*, but he’s still in the first group of that wave of players. I can see where they’d be able to get him out for his second round before everyone had finished round 1.

  • the back eight, really

My pick is Stricker, since it rhymes with Wicker.

Since Round 2 started before Round 1 is complete, it gives the tournament a chance to catch up. The players had about 1 hour before finishing Round 1 until they started round 2 which gives them a chance to eat, or get some work done on driving range, or whatever.

They will have about 2.5 hours of play tomorrow morning to conclude, then they make a cut (top 60 and ties). depending on how many make the cut, the last group should go off about 4 pm. Which should get them to the clubhouse right about sundown.

Thanks for the info.
I guess i should have realized they just swapped the am/pm w/o reversing the entire order.

I’d like to see Lefty get another couple of majors. That finish at Winged Foot was one of the most painful things I ever saw!

Looks like they will be teeing off up til nearly 6 p.m. Those guys getting twilight rates?

How early do they usually start on weekends? Could they start earlier than usual to finish up rd 2 as quickly as possible? Then how long do they need to change pin positions and such? Will they mow/roll/rake again?

They will mow the greens at their normal morning time and shotgun the remaining players at ~7:15. They won’t mow until after dew settles and that should be about 5:45 am. They can rake the bunkers before dawn. They will change the holes as soon as the last group plays through.

They should finish up about 9:45, so I would guess that first tee time for the third round will be 10 am. At 60 players and twosomes and 10 minute increments that means the last tee time is 2:50 pm.

NBC’s schedule it suppose to go off at 5:30 ET on Saturday but I don’t think there is any way that can happen if they keep to their SOP of twosomes and off #1 tee only after the cut, and 60 players is the best case scenario. For every two players, add 10 minutes to the last tee time.

NBC’s Saturday night schedule are all reruns, so I would guess that NBC is prepared to stay until they finish play which looks like it could go to sunset if they have 70-75 players make the cut.

Whoops, I got my time zones mixed up. NBC is scheduled to go off the air at 7:30 et (not 5:30).

Sorry about that.

This is boring. For the first time in memory, I am turning the TV off during the US Open and going out to mow the lawn. Watching Steve Stricker grind out pars is not my idea of compelling golf.

They tried to shorten the course today to add some drama but it isn’t happening. The risks are too great for the potential reward for the players to try a tough shot. They’d rather hit an approach shot from 120 yards from the fairway than to have it 30 feet off the green but buried in the rough.

Looks like another journeyman is going to be our national champion.

Yawn.

It’s a course that rewards strategic golf. I like it though I’m not sure I would call Mickelson and journeyman…

Jesus, it’s the slowest golf tournament ever. I like golf, but holy cow that was a long day.

I just can’t bear to watch Faky Mickelson win a US Open. I think he is a big phony and I just can’t stand him… But I can’t root against him, either. I also can’t stand Billy Horshel, because he just seems like a spoiled prick.

That means I’m 100% in the Steve Stricker camp. It just blows my mind how a guy who can be so clutch in the FedEx finals, almost year after year, hasn’t really come all that close to winning a major. Plus, I just like guys who can putt… Mickelson excepted.

I think Mickelson will fall short. Just a gut feeling.

I think he will pull through. Just a gut feeling.

We shall soon find out. Will be a fun afternoon of golf.

More likely boring as hell. There hasn’t been a “fun” US Open since Tiger faced down Rocco Mediate in 2008. The USGA has taken all the fun out of it.

Who will be this year’s Webb Simpson or Lucas Glover?

Well, that’s an epic collapse by Stricker. What a shank!

And Mickelson isn’t looking so hot. I’m switching my horse to Mahan, partially because he isn’t dressed in four clashing colors like he was yesterday.

You don’t think this is exciting? Apparently we watch different sports.

Two big holes left. Phil has to pull something big out.

Ooof. Has to birdie 18 which is a big ask.

It’s tense, but not fun. Fun is Arnold Palmer starting his final round by driving the green at Cherry Hills, shooting 65 and coming from seven shots back to win. Fun is Tom Watson chipping in at the 71st hole at Pebble Beach, which would never happen with the rough at Merion. Fun is Johnny Miller shooting 63 at Oakmont. These guys are just bogeying their way down the backstretch.

Justin Rose shot even par and is in at +1. If Stricker, Mickleson, Schwartzel, and Mahan had shot par, they’d be winners. Horshel and Donald would be looking at a playoff.

Mickleson is getting incredibly lucky with his lies in the rough.

Sorry, I don’t agree. I like seeing a course fight back. Each to his own and no need to debate it.

Rose is a worthy winner. He kept his cool and played very good golf.

Day and Rose were my picks for good rounds today, both played well. Poor Phil, ever the bridesmaid. Congrats to Rose for the win.
