DEL POTRO BREAKS! DEL POTRO BREAKS! 2 gorgeous down the line passing shots at 30-30 and then 30-40, now we’re on serve at 5-5.
As Melanie Oudin would say… COME ON!

Go Del Potro!!!
See? Isn’t it more exciting to watch Roger actually have to play rather than just watching him practically teleport balls to where he wants/needs them?
Del Potro wins the set!
Was a rousing tiebreaker, and I think we’re finally seeing the man that beat Nadal so handily. Should be a real test for Roger, and I’m no longer embarrassed to have given Del Po a 50/50 shot at this.
Del Potro breaks again! The Argentine takes the lead in the 3rd, up 4-3, and will now serve. Federer’s making a bunch of errors, and if he doesn’t watch out, the set’s gonna run away from him. Will Del Po join Djokovic in breaking the hegemony of Fed-Nadal over the last 4 years?
EDIT: And Federer breaks back! Of course he does!
Now Federer is losing his cool! That’s awesome! I wasn’t expecting to hear that kind of language during my daytime TV watching. And then they immediately go to a commercial after it.
Federer’s showing a bit of a temper as the umpire allows a challenge from Del Po 10 seconds after the point is over.
“Don’t tell me to be quiet! When I want to talk I’ll talk… I don’t give a shit…”
CBS airs the word “shit”!
**DOH! **
Two double faults in a row from Del Potro give Roger a 2 sets to 1 lead.
Del Potro’s still hitting the ball quite well, though, and I expect a high-quality 4th set. His forehands have been monstrous, reaching 110 mph several times. As quick and agile as he is, Fed hasn’t been able to handle the big ones.
The Ump was doing a talk to the hand thing, man that would’ve set me off a lot worse than “I don’t give a shit.” Helluva good final. DP is a fricking windmill.
I see it. Federer is off the mark on serve and baseline. The kid’s defending his backhand and making RF push it.
Yeah, it’s turning out to be a very worthy final. Del Potro’s conquered his nerves for the most part and is playing pretty much up to his potential. He’s broken Roger 3 times, which is more than anyone else in the tournament, I think.
Juan Martin’s letting up on his serve to get a higher percentage, and it seems to be working for him. Who else would have the hutzpah to think they’re superior to Fed in a ground stroke rally?
EDIT: And of course as I type that, Fed breaks back to level the set at 4 games all. Great rallies!
Now a switch to serve and volley, RF has a deep tank. Dang!
“The best thing to do here is play first serve”? That effing serve was out.
This US Open has had the worst officiating in recent memory. Sad for it to sully such a nice set of finals.
Del Potro breaks Roger in the first game of the 5th set! Massive forehand keeps on annihilating the ball.
Holy cow! He could do it!
Roger’s looking decidedly human here. Still playing very well, by anyone else’s standards, but the cape is off, folks. The cape is off.
And isn’t so much exciting than when he dismantled Djokovic? Having an actual competition is a lot of fun!
I love great tennis, and I don’t care if one guy is winning 90% of the points, if the points themselves are amazing, I am very happy. Luckily, this final is giving us some good exchanges, though I still think the highlight of the tournament was Nadal-Monfils, followed by Federer-Djokovic. This match has way too many errors and double faults.
Del Potro does it! He is solid Kryptonite!
