I just noticed my US passport is due to expire on 8-11-09. I have a tentative trip planned to Mexico the weekend of July 24. Will I have be able to leave/return to the US so close to my passport expiration date?

It is valid right up until the expiration date. Send the renewal form in now, though, in case you need to travel after Aug. 11.
This site seems to indicate that the visitor’s passport must be valid for six months when entering Mexico.
US re-entry info. I don’t see anything in there about passport expiration dates for US citizens returning to the US.

404 - Page Not Found (nothing about any restrictions to Passport expiration, but it is stated quite clearly when I look up Singapore or Switzerland - which were noted in the article above).
To renew, it seems I have to include my current Passport, which would make this trip difficult! I plan to renew as soon as we get back.
A passport is not required to visit Mexico. Any valid government-issued ID is sufficient for a US citizen to enter Mexico, including a passport.

Returning to the US, your passport must be valid. The days of being able to return from Mexico on a drivers license are gone. So as long as you return before the expiration, you are okay.
