US student question

I’m not sure what to search for regarding this subject so…
In the US, if a person has a place in a college and has signed up for classes, what could make this person lose their place in the college? Like the history of the person could be brought up or they did something in other colleges in the past or what could someone else know about that person that could be brought to the colleges attention?

Help much appreciated.

I’m not sure you can find a factual answer. US colleges and universities have widely different rules. Even state schools vary from state to state. I think fraudulent claims on transcripts and applications might be one reason for dismissal. For example, if it turned out a student hadn’t completed a secondary school, but had claimed he had on his application.

Other than that, I think serious unresolved criminal matters might be grounds; I don’t mean unpaid parking tickets, but something like a warrant for the persons arrest, failure to appear for a trial, etc. Hope this helps.

It would be much easier if you told us what you’ve done

I work at a university, and technically we could dismiss any student for any reason. I’m not sure if there is a set policy, but there is an office/committee that makes dismissal decisions.
Common reasons to be dismissed would be:

  • Disciplinary reasons (committing a crime, academic dishonesty)
  • False or incomplete application information discovered
  • Scholastic dismissal (flunked out)
  • Dismissal from another school

I believe that some colleges have rescinded offers of admission when previously-admitted highschool seniors slack off in a major way in their final semester before graduation.

I would also imagine that public and private schools are different, as they are in most law-related things.

Thank you for your help so far.

To narrow it down I’m more worried about what exactly a person could tell the college personally, could they say
“I know this person and they’ve done such and such etc”, I’m talking about University of Wisconsin Stout specifically aswell and what their grounds for dismissal are. I looked all over their website and couldn’t find anything helpful in that respect.

It sure depends on what “such and such” involves. Was it a trivial juvenile indiscretion, like shoplifting candy bars or slipping a frog down a girl’s blouse? Was it a hate crime indicative of a problem with gays, minorities or women? The details really matter if you want an informed decision. I’m sure UW-Stout knows you can’t walk on water; they might worry about whether you pose a danger to their reputation (or to their students).

Ok being specific, it’s about drugs, not the “serious” hard ones, just pot smoking and doing that actually in the same college when I was there originally last year and people might tell about it, before I was kicked out because of not commiting myself and failing a majority of classes.

I really had to re evaluate what I was doing with my life so I applied again.
So all that sort of looms, a person can’t just call up and tell a university about what I have done there in the past can they?
Or can they and the uni makes a decision?

A call from a random stranger saying that an applicant smoked pot isn’t going to carry any weight to an admissions officer.

That sounds a bit paranoid-- you should stop smoking.
Why would the college do such a thing based on hear-say? Why would your friends narc on you like that (do you have exceptionally snitty enemies? Is this based on a credible threat?)? Most colleges I can’t see REALLY caring about ALLEGED drug use. I’d be more worried about getting busted and instantly losing all finanical aid, instead, if you want something reasonable to feel paranoid about (do the FAFSA/ promissory notes still have that clause about drugs these days?)

Well I stopped a while ago now. I don’t know how the uni would react with such information, also with the fact that I was kicked out for not commiting to subjects they might see it as an accumulation of things which might end up with losing a place.
I hope that it doesn’t carry weight.

If you don’t still smoke then you should be fine. If you are already in, then don’t worry about it. If you have applied again, then mention why you dropped out in your application along with steps you have taken to make sure this time isn’t a repeat of the last. And this time take all the steps necessary to avoid dropping out again. One drop out is bad, two drop outs are even worse!
