Usage statistics of Breton?

Does anyone have a good resouce (in either French or English) for usage statistics of the Breton Language? I’m specificaly looking for information on how many older vs. younger speakers there are, as well as Breton’s place in French schools (which I know to be very little). Another interesting question is whether Breton is spoken outside of France (it is in some places outside Brittany). I’m having a hard time finding any hard facts, and while my french reading skills are fine for disecting papers, I don’t have the Google skills in it I should. And I’ve already gotten as much as I can from wikipedia (English and French).

Have you looked at www.langue-bretonne.com? The webmaster, Fañch Broudic, has written a book called Qui parle breton aujourd’hui? Qui le parlera demain? (tr: “Who speaks Breton today? Who will speak it tomorrow?”)

The book’s web page is rather frustrating to navigate, but the multiple hidden-list drop-down boxes lead to other pages with large quantities of survey results. For example, Qui parle breton aujourd’hui? Les principaux résultats du sondage (tr: “Who speaks Breton today? Principal results of the survey”) contains multiple tables of statistics, pie charts, and bar graphs. Likewise, Il est interdit de cracher par terre et de parler breton (tr: “Spitting on the ground and speaking Breton are forbidden”) mentions the teaching (or lack thereof) of Breton in the school system. Lots of material at that site, but IMHO rather poorly organized.

That should keep you busy for a while! I’ll see if I can dig up more online info later this weekend.

The Bretons are great sailors and navigators, so there may be smatterings of Breton spoken in locations around the world, but I’m not aware of any significant Breton-speaking communities outside of France (in contrast to – as an example – Basque, of which there are many speakers in Idaho, Nevada, and Northern California), but my ignorance shouldn’t be used as a cite! :stuck_out_tongue:

Take a look at Ethnologue:

This is a good but not perfect resource for information about languages.

Breton at a Crossroads: Looking Back, Moving Forward. In English, fewer raw numbers than the French site in my previous post, just one longish easy-to-read web page with no site-navigation issues (and lots of references!).

Woah! Looks like a great site, for a change (I’ve rarely been impressed by sites about breton, rather the contrary) ! Thanks…

Not surprisingly, there are Bretons in Ireland.

I just found Bretons du Monde, a website for Breton expatriates that has reports from (and links to) Breton communities all over the world. It looks as though New Caledonia would qualify as a sizeable Breton community (5000 Breton descendants, which the site claims is over 3% of the population although the population figure from the CIA Factbook (219,246) makes it come out to 2.3%. The local Breton Society was founded in 1894.
