I am trying to set up an old (1998) Compaq computer, windows 2000, for wireless internt access. I am using a usb wireless adaptor. It does not seem to be working. Any advice on what I can do to perhaps get it up and running. It is located in a building with an excellent wireless system, so signal strength is not the issue.
We’re going to need way more information.
What do you mean by ‘not working’?
What brand of adapter is it?
Is it showing up in the device manager?
If so, does it indicate that it’s working properly? If not, does any other USB device work?
Did the associated software install ok?
What kind of information is the wireless software showing you?
Can you get a list of access points nearby?
Is your AP encrypted?
Please give more information re what you have done and the systems response to date. . A USB network adapter “not working” covers a lot of territory and Win 2000 has notoriously poor USB support…
What is the PC model #
What is the adapter model #
Does the system “see” the adapter when plugged in?
Did you fully install the drivers?
Are the drivers listed as being specific to Win 2000?
Is the adapter shown as being properly installed in the Win 2000 hardware device list (assuming 2000 has a device list)
Have you set SSIDs to be the same on both the router and adapter?
Does your buiding system have WEP etc security passwords you need to enter to gain access.
