Use of the word cunt

This sums up my position as well quite nicely.

Who’s “we?”

But what’s the board’s stance on “moist?”

Or “panties”
shudder

George Lass’ mom Joy detests the word. Thinks it sounds “dirty”.

So you say she is being a poor mod?

The last warning i received on this board came from you, and included an admonition that i had been around long enough to know better.

You’ve been here only a year less than me, you have almost twice as many posts, and you’ve been a moderator for over five years. What’s your excuse?

Also, as yojimbo’s post makes clear, you know very well what the rule is, because you were the direct cause of a previous extended discussion on the subject. At the end of that discussion, the guy who runs the board made clear that the word in question is NOT banned on this message board, as long as it is not directed at another poster.

Yes, some civility is expected: civility towards other posters. That’s the issue. And it’s been made clear, on numerous occasions, that the simple uttering of an expletive, when not directed against another poster, is not per se uncivil, and nor is it against the rules.

As other like Green Bean have noted, you’re welcome to your opinion about the word, but you still need to learn the difference between your opinion and what the actual rules are. Christ, i thought that by now you might finally have grasped the distinction, but you clearly haven’t.

See, here’s the thing: nobody called anybody else a cunt in that thread to begin with. Honey started it by saying you’re not allowed to use the “C” word, in a mistaken interpretation of the rules.

To which Green Bean replied:

So, my takeaway is that several of the new posters, being unaware of the rules and taking Honey’s post as fact, reported Green Bean for saying a “bad” word. When actually no rules were broken, as mere use of the word is not against the rules, nor is calling a non-board member a cunt. I think twickster’s mod note was misdirected. Regardless of her personal preference, the word wasn’t being flung around nor directed at anyone. It was more like Green Bean demonstrating the word isn’t against the rules and several people reporting her for what they saw in their minds was a violation. She wasn’t even encouraging people to use the word, just saying that using the word isn’t verboten. I agree with the rule against insulting other posters and the rule against hate speech, but although some people find the word cunt distasteful, it’s not universally viewed as hate speech. People need to pull up their big person’s panties and not hyperventilate over the use of the word. It’s permitted, so, might as well get used to it.

On edit: mhendo said it much better than I did, as always.

I just find this telling.

So, what’s the point of having moderators if they aren’t even going to actually look at the issues that are reported? Just having some sort of auto-flag system and be done with it.

I’d call this poor moderation, but it isn’t even moderation. It’s just Pavlov’s dog salivating at the sound of a bell.

If that thread had of been a thread full of Brits, Paddies, Aussies and Kiwis snarking about TV the amount of times cunt would have been used would have surprised a lot of people who weren’t used to such things.

Rules are rules and should be made clear to people but this incident has just made things unclear for a lot of newcomers.

Those of you who haven’t moderated a vBulletin site might not know that when a post is reported the software generates a report for the moderator that shows who reported the post, a link to the post and the actual content of the post.

Not even bothering to read the post in question might be the laziest moderation in the history of the universe. How on Earth can anyone think that it’s reasonable to scold someone like a school marm without even knowing the content of the post aside from one word?

It’s too damn sultry in here.

But I don’t wear panties. Soooo…

Why? Dick & cunt may represent corresponding parts of male & female genitalia, but that doesn’t make their connotations identical. Cunt is far more vulgar and insulting.

This is plainly obvious.

Just ask Dick Nixon

That cunt?

The fact that the word “Dick” is a formerly common diminutive for Richard and even today can be said even in church without anybody but me drawing a rapier supports the contention that dick is nowhere near as vulgar as cunt.

(And the fact that I’d draw a rapier means nothing. I’ll unsheathe my blade for any old reason.)

Wait a minute… is this a “dick” joke?

Reminds me of John Mulaney’s bit from New in Town.
