You know, I feel bad for the people from Scunthorpe.
It’s a really popular cuss there.
What a cunning bunch of stunts.

And the silence is deafening.
I’m sure she’ll be along any minute once her headache clears up.
Maybe she’ll improv it!
Yes, and…?
Let me clarify this and then we can bring this discussion to a close.
As most users know, directing the word “cunt” against another SDMB user is a violation of our rules. The term is permissible in other contexts. We don’t encourage the use of vulgarities, but mere mention of the term, or directing it against some off-board individual, isn’t against our rules.
We’ve attempted to make most of our rules bright-line standards. We have a few purposely vague rules, such as the prime directive against jerklike behavior, that are meant to cover rare or unanticipated situations. We invoke such rules sparingly.
We enforce the rules as written. The reference in the present case to “board culture,” a vague, uncodified standard, was a mistake. Moderators are free to express their personal opinions about the use of vulgarities and such, but should clearly indicate they speak as ordinary members when they do so. I have clarified this to staff.
As I’ve said many times, I’m grateful to our volunteer staff for the indispensable work they do. We all make mistakes; this was a minor one. I’ve explained matters to all concerned, am satisfied the message has gotten through, and consider the matter resolved.
