User banned from a thread for (I think) an honest mistake

Over in This post, k9bfriender was banned from the thread for transposing user Omar Little’s username into Little Omar in a response.

I don’t know if that was intended as a dig or just an honest mistake, but generally k9bfriender was discussing things in good faith in that thread and this seems like an overreaction. Give him the chance to apologize and move on.

Damn, that’s harsh. A thread ban for that? Maybe he messed up the name.

I’ve made some really egregious errors and typos on these forums. Who hasnt?
A few have been mistakes and mis-spelling of someone’s Doper name.

IMHO, it seems like the poster k9befriender, made a honest mistake.

Not sure if you’re doing that ironically, but it’s k9bfriender, no first ‘e’. You can reply in another thread if needed.

Aaaacckkkk!

Ha ha. I quadruple-checked my original post to make sure I didn’t make the same mistake, but, good support for my claim anyway

Yeah, It’s not as though “Little Omar” is in an offensive transformation of the name to dig at the person, it’s hard to see what malicious thing C.J. thought was happening there. Just looks like a meaningless error to me.

manson1972 and Beckdawrek, you seriously think that was an honest mistake? :dubious:

I looked and can’t find it, but I thought there was a rule about changing another poster’s username to mock them. It’s certainly jerkish.

It falls under the general rule against insulting other users.

The FAQ does specifically mention that you can parody someone’s user name in the BBQ Pit, but no other forum.

Considering who the poster was, yeah. Perhaps he was fed up and just decided to go with a username mix-up put-down, but it seems out of character to me.

FWIW, I’d forgotten about the Wire character until I looked it up. As cool as Omar Little is, Little Omar is a genuine certified war hero with a hospital named after him.

If it was mockery, it missed the mark. But it sure looks like an honest mistake to me.

It’s quite easy to inadvertently transpose first and last names in many cases. There is a well-known climate scientist named Kerry Emanuel, for example, and especially back in the days when John Kerry was prominent in politics, I would frequently and absent-mindedly refer to the former as Emanuel Kerry.

IMHO, we should be guided by common-sense unwritten rules as well as the formally written ones, and one of the unwritten rules for moderators in my view should be “if there are multiple plausible interpretations of a post, then in the absence of a hostile posting history, the more charitable interpretation should apply.”

I concur with reversing the thread ban.

Huh, well this is an interesting day. Sometime I may talk about it in MPSIMS.

Just got back from my grandmother’s funeral, so being banned from a thread for a mistake is pretty low on my list of emotional priorities, but I would like to apologize.

Complete brainfart on my part. There was no intent or maliciousness behind it.

Omar Little, I really have no excuse, I was actually a big fan of The Wire back in the day. Just for whatever reason when I went to type in your nom de plume I transposed the words without thinking. I should have been more vigilant in both my writing and my editing.

I will do my best to not make any such mistake in the future. And I also extend apologies to the board for any troubles it may have caused.

Thank you to manson1972, (and I know very well not to call you neither mason nor son  ) , iamthewalrus(:3= (whose name I just triple checked for spelling [symboling?]) Beckdawrek (even if you can’t get my poster name right), Riemann, and Left Hand of Dorkness for giving me the benefit of the doubt, that is greatly appreciated.

I will understand if Jonathan Chance feels that my fox pass has poisoned discourse in that thread to the point where my participation can no longer be productive, and if that is the case, I apologize to those who have addressed me that I will not be able to respond.

ETA: and to wolfpup

Not only that, but after The Wire’s Omar Little was killed off, another character took over his role in the neighborhood as a thief who robs and kills gangsters (He is the one who shot Snoop). Fans referred to this character, at season’s end, as “Little Omar.”

We also have a Little Nemo here, and we often post in the same threads. So Little Omar does not sound like an insulting name, and if I made the same mistake, it would certainly no be mean-spirited.

FWIW, it seems like the sort of thing that could be handled with a note. IMHO, of course.

My condolences on the death of your grandmother.

I have to ask: is “fox pass” spellcheck wreaking havoc?

I’m awfully sorry k9, a blunder I cannot explain.

ETA : condolences on your loss.

Man, that was some harsh moderation. I often find that words are transposed, duplicated, or left out when I try to edit quickly. And these days, the time-out problem seems to raise its ugly head extra-often when you have to use the “edit” function.

k9bfriender deserves the benefit of the doubt even before his post in this thread.

Honestly, I wonder if some of the jerkitude assumption is because of an unconscious association with Trumpian nicknames? You know darn well that if Trump had a foil named “Omar Little” he’d immediately start referring to them as “little Omar.” But that doesn’t prove that this is what k9bfriender was up to.

And k9, I’m sorry for the loss of your grandmother.

Given how “Trumpy” it sounds, I can see it.
