User Kaitlyn has been banned for having (by her own admission) repeatedly lied concerning details of her life at the SDMB. While we encourage all our members to realize that things you read at the SDMB should be viewed with all due circumspection, we do not want our posters making up long involved stories out of whole cloth, over a period of months, and fabricating a “fake identity”.

That was…strange. I was just about to tease her/him - I’m lost for pronouns now - about knowing a lot about comics for a chick, too. If anyone asks, I saw through the whole sorry charade the moment I read any of his/her posts. Least I never flirted…
Yeah. You tend to believe people are who they say they are, especially on this board. Like I said, strange: never really interacted with - screw pronouns - Kaitlyn that much, so I don’t feel betrayed, but she seemed like a totally cool person who’d been through a lot of tough stuff and come out brave and cracking jokes. I was cheering for her. I think everyone was. Then to find out his threads were a bunch of elaborate bullshit to get attention - I dunno, I’m just weirded out.
Now I’m gonna eye everyone suspiciously: you got proof you’re gay, matt? I kid - it’s late and I’m going to bed.
You know, I read every single one of Kaitlyn’s threads I could find, although I don’t think we exchanged more than two words. As someone who spent a lot of her twenties wondering about her own sexuality, I saw Kaitlyn as a role model to be who you are, and be proud of that.
Now I’m feeling a strange sense of disappointment. Not anger, not annoyance…just disappointment.
I thought she/he seemed like an attention whore. That’s why all the posting about the trannie stuff. I don’t think a real person going through that would be so elaborate in talking about it. I could be wrong, though.
I don’t know what good speculation does anybody at this point, but here I go anyway. I just don’t think there’s any way some dude on the internet could pull this off without serious knowledge of the issues at hand. Of all the places on the internet, and I mean that quite literally, wouldn’t you think that the SDMB would be the very last membership group to be fooled by a fake? I mean, if I decided tomorrow to become Julie Chitwood on the boards, I’d be found out in less than an hour from when I started pretending. I doubt I could make one post on the subject, even if I did a little background research, without coming across as an obvious fake. And yet Kaitlyn fooled everyone, right? I don’t follow MPSIMS all that much, but was there ever anyone who raised even the slightest bit of concern regarding the truth value of Kaitlyn’s story? You have to figure that whoever, uh, that person was, they were connected in some significant way to some real life gender confusion. If that’s true, then nobody need feel ashamed for caring – even if it wasn’t Kaitlyn whose life you were hearing about, or even if it was a doctored version of that poster’s life, or even sheer fantasy about what that poster thinks the future’s going to be like, what you all were feeling was real. Maybe it’s more like getting involved in a really good movie than it is like a real life interaction, but one way or another, you were learning about the way the real world works. The fact that Bambi’s mom was just a drawing doesn’t really mean that you weren’t really sad to find out she was on the hood of some dude’s car. And that’s because there are other Bambis out there.
True, Jimmy, but don’t be surprised if you are the victim of a pile-on because some people here insist that only the real Bambi can speak of experiencing that.
Still, I’m not sure I agree with the “don’t misrepresent yourself that flagrantly” rule. If everybody’s personna were as close to real life as mine is this place could get pretty boring.
