Using Inkjet Papers

My husband bought me an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer for work use. I had been saying that I want it. I really like it so far, but…

the Epson paper selection is very limited. I understand that you can use different brands of paper, but you have to know what settings to use. From what I’ve cobbled together it appears that one can create specific color profiles that will work with a selected paper. By the way, the paper I’m trying to use is approved for inkjet use.

I guess my primary question would be if anyone has had any experience making non-Epson inkjet papers work in Epson printers and if custom color profiles have anything to do with the quality as well as the color. I’m getting smudging, blurring and extremely slow drying with this paper I’m trying to use. If a custom profile is the answer, can someone recommend how to go about getting/making one?

The paper is Jenson Glossy Text 100#. Any info would be helpful.

Heart,

It looks like this paper is designed for commercial high-speed laser printers/copiers, not inkjets. That could explain the lengthy drying time and its symptoms of smearing and blurring.

Just out of curiousity, how did you come into this paper? I had a hard time finding information about it; it seems to be aimed a printing shops, not consumers. If you’re looking for a photo paper, feel free to ask.

What CP said. In looking at the specs on this paper it’s far too inexpensive to be decent coated inkjet paper. Kodak (among others) makes a huge range of coated inkjet papers and most Staples will have dozens of different varieties. True photo quality papers are usually fairly expensive.

I got the paper from Lewis Paper Place (lewispaper.com) and they told me it could be used on Inkjets. Their product catalog lists inkjet as well. I know there is a “Laser” version and just a Gloss version. I certainly don’t doubt that you’re right, though, based on my results.

LPP sells primarily to printers, but they do consumer work as well. I haven’t had a whole lot of luck getting paper from there that I can use on my Inkjets (this new model or previous models). But they do work very well on my color laser Phaser 8400 for half-decent quality bigger jobs.

I did a little shopping around to see what I could just pick up and CompUSA had some Ilford paper, and I got some Staples paper that is double-side matte which will hopefully work for what I’m doing (I need to put together a sales presentation that contains marketing mock-ups). I’m going to test it now.

CDW was closed and I think they may have Epson rolls I can get the same day.

Aside from that, I’ll have to hold my horses and order Epson paper rolls from Epson to get the custom sizes I’m looking for.

I’m still curious about the whole ICC profiles thing and what, if anything, they do besides color management, so if anyone knows about that…
