Im from NYC and family live in manhattan and recently moved to brooklyn. I went back to nyc recently but then came back to canada. I do online stuff here so im in canada every few months then back to ny for a bit before going back and forth. So basically all the mail i get in the us goes to my manhattan mailbox and thus my family would get my mail which majority of the time is useless.
I also recently will be changing my bank acct address on file to the new address in brooklyn. I use couple of usa banks and the thing is eventhough i dont get much regular mail from them i use online banking statements only, i know they still mail them back to my home address as well.
Does that mean right now since im in canada, only way for me to do this address change is online with usps? I think that i could have done it at the postal office a while back when i was still in the us? So its $1 to do it online correct to change my address that way all the mail i ever get will go to new brooklyn address right but if i done it back at postal office it would have been free?
Does anyone know how long it takes for usps to update the mail? I read that if you do it online its actually faster than at the postal office? I obviously dont want something like a jury summons etc to get sent to my old address and then i found out i never got it from them.
Is this the website for the address change? I read there was a scam one but thats changemyaddress.com?
From looking at this, it seems like you could change the address for your entire family. Would they be able to do this at the post office? Because if they can, couldn’t someone from my family just change it for all of us since we all have same last name?
I don’t know about all the rest, but that is the official USPS change of address site.
Pauly 01… You said your old address was mailbox. Did you mean with the family, or a separate box just for yourself? If you were receiving mail by yourself, YOU would need to file a change of address on your own. If you received mail with the family any adult from the family can file a change for the household. There are a couple of IFS involved. If there is more than one last name in the family, a change must be filed for each name. If anyone in the family is not moving to the same new address, then changes should be filed for each person. Be sure to notify any one or companies who might send you mail of your correct address, as the Post Office will only forward your mail for a limited time.
If I understand you correctly, you get or download electronic banking statements but are concerned about the paper statements that are still being mailed to you. In my experience, most banks, utilities, credit card companies and so forth are happy to stop sending paper statements, as printing and mailing those statements costs them money.
yes all my banking statement are online statement. But some times they send me stuff through regular mail.
But the reason why i ask this quesiton is b/c if i get like jury summon or other important mail, obviously i want it sent to the new address
Old address mailbox is with my family. We all have same last name. No i dont have own mailbox. Okay does that mean they can just go to the post office and do this and thus i wont need to do it for myself online while in canada?
How long would it take before changes are done after the address change?
My USPS carrier/temp supervisor (“204B”) husband says one of your family members could fill out a change of address card for you as an individual at the post office or give it to the letter carrier. This would take longer to get into the system and catch all the mail, say 14 days or so.
The online method - go to usps.com or usps.gov (redirects to the first address) if you’re worried about a fake website - will cost you a dollar via credit card to verify your identity, but will get processed in the system more quickly.
Forwarding ends after a year, so make sure you’ve notified each of your contacts individually by then.
Usually you can get those little change of address kits from the post office that include cards to send to all your contacts to notify them of the change.
