Value of a C.I.S. degree

I’m planning on starting a direct-entry Masters degree in Computer Information Systems this fall (I’m employed during the day in a computer department at a manufacturer - it’s an evening program). It’s been described as a cross between an MIS degree and a CS degree; in other words, a CS degree without all the math, or an MIS degree with a lot more programming and a lot less budgeting.

I’m having second thoughts, though. CIS degrees are apparently a blend of the two in response to pressure from industry, but I’ve never heard how it actually looks on a resume. Will a Masters in CS trump the same CIS degree? Will it look like a watered down program?

In short, will it spruce up my resume, or would I be better off going for the MSCS degree?

I’m asking this in GQ rather than IMHO or MPSIMS because I’m looking for expert opinions by people who do hiring or are experienced with the qualifications required or needed in computer departments.

What kind of job do you want when you graduate?

If you want to design software for companies like Microsoft or Oracle, I would suggest a MSCS.

If you want want to work in an MIS department or a consulting firm like Accenture or Viant, I don’t think it really matters what degree you pursue.
IMO, CIS and MIS degrees (which are business degrees at most schools) do sometimes appear to be watered down CS degrees. When I hear CIS or MIS degree, I usually assume that the person is interested in project management or sales for a high tech company. When I hear CS (which is usually engineering) I assume this person wants to stay technical.

Either degree is fine, but without knowing what your career plans are, it’s hard to advise you.
