Vampires and Werewolves

Popular lore about Vampires suggests that they:
[ul]
[li] Are immortal.[/li][li] Drink blood.[/li][li] Can bestow (or inflict, if you will) vampirism on their victims.[/li][li] Are shapeshifting: bats, wolves, etc.[/li][li] Have an aversion to light.[/li][li] Can be destroyed only by driving a stake through the heart and then chopping off the head.[/li][li] Have a very slick dress-sense.[/li][li] Aren’t particularly benign beings.[/li][li] Seem to prefer solitude.[/li][/ul]

Popular lore about werewolves suggests that they:
[ul]
[li] Are shapeshifters.[/li][li] Lose control over their humanistic side when transformed.[/li][li] Transform at the full moon.[/li][li] Are self-regenerating.[/li][li] Seem to prefer solitude, unlike wolves, who live and hunt in packs.[/li][li] Don’t seem to be concerned much about fashion.[/li][li] Can be killed only by the use of silver. (This one is rather iffy.)[/li][li] Generally seem to be unhappy, irritable mopers.[/li][/ul]

All of which brings me to my question.

What happens if a vampire bites a werewolf? Does it end up creating the ultimate comic-book monster? How could such a creature be killed? Opinions, please.
Also, are there any games, books or comics that actually work with this premise?

I seem to remember an episode of The Real Ghostbusters that dealt with a war between vamps and werewolves.

Seems they can turn each other, and there is no limit to how many times they can go back and forth.

In White Wolf’s World of Darkness, it’s technically possibel for a vampire to make a werewolf into a vampire. Mostly the werewolf dies (hell, if he tries it, mostly the VAMPIRE dies…), but otherwise the werewolf’s basically powerful and screwed all at once. Still mega-strong, still has claws, still can shapeshift, I believe they’re still vulnerable to silver…

It’s also undead and therefore drinks blood and has that whole sunlight problem. YMMV as far as dress sense goes.

They also tend to be all depressive, but that’s sort of par for the course in the WoD. :stuck_out_tongue: Being a vampire takes away a lot of the werewolves’ nifty. non-mythology-based powers of twinkitude that they get. And they’re severed from their relationship with the Great Earth Mother, which bites.
no pun intended.

I have a feeling someone on the boards had something to do with the creation of this episode, because it’s been brought up in, like, ten threads in the past week or so. It was a cool episode, but from what I recall, the bite of either would lead to immediate transformation (which is not in line with either mythos that I can think of), and a werewolf would turn into just a vampire, and vice versa. There was no “hybrid”, as it were. But then again, the Real Ghostbusters wasn’t really in line with it’s own mythology (ie. the movies), so I wouldn’t really expect them to get either of these right completely either.

As has been pointed out, in Vampire: the Masquerade, hybrids can be created, but it generally leads to an insane, bloodthirsty killing machine (I believe they’re refered to as “abominations”) which are pretty much put down immediately by either species upon sight. It also takes some dedications, because turning takes some effort and a purpose, and a werewolf can drink gallons of vampire blood without being infected (maybe a little sick to the stomach, but aside from that). And a vampire can recover from a bite from a lycanthrope without getting any kind of curse and becoming one themselves, so it seems kinda one sided.

I like the idea that a vampire bitten by a werewolf just hurts a lot, and vice versa, and that drinking the blood of a vampire just means the werewolf has to rinse his mouth out a little extra due to munchin’ on a dead guy. I think the supernatural properties of both should pretty much cancel each other out. Perhaps if attacked in human form, the werewolf may be able to be turned, but from my understanding, injuries sustained to a vampire while in human form will heal at an alarming rate, and uless killed by silver, the human will be ressurrected when exposed to a full moon (ala Frankenstien vs. the Wolfman and Monster Squad). Perhaps they can be turned, but once the full moon hits them, they’re purged of their vampiric ways (seeing as how vampires are technically dead, and the full moon will ressurrect werewolves that die as humans…of course, the turning is a mystical death, so who knows?).

My vote is no, but crazy things happen, so who knows?

Actually, now that I think about it, Lon Chaney was killed by silver in the Wolfman, yet still came back, so perhaps even a supernatural death can be cured by the light of a full moon. Of course, that’s all just according to that one source, and pretty much every other one states that once a werewolf is dead, they’re dead, so who knows? My bet it still that a dead werewolf is a dead werewolf, but one should burry the bodies properly just to make sure.

Hmmm…I gotta go…

Good grief! I don’t know about any of the things you people are referring to. I don’t even know if the examples given are books, movies, anime, cartoons or comics!

I feel ignorant.

Wasn’t there a scene in the movie Moster Squad where the Wolfman, having been bitten by Dracula, had transformed into a pathetic, deformed bat/wolf hybrid?

No, there definately was not such a scene…what you’re thinking of is when Dracula was shot in bat form and the father found him in mid transformation. Although immune to bullets for the most part, when you’re that small, they still apparently hurt a LOT!!!

There is a scene though where they put dynamite in the wolfman’s pants and blow him up and his little bits fly back together. That was pretty damn cool.
