Vancouver DopeFest!

While I’m on this thread, what does the Granville Island Coffee House actually look like? You see, if I don’t know what something generally looks like (or what major landmarks are around it), the likelihood of my getting lost increases exponentially. (does it EVER!) So if Larry or someone could tell me, that would be greatly appreciated. (hopefully, it has a rather large sign or something of the sort outside, as that would help a lot)

(and this marks my third or fourth post in a row to this thread, depending on whether you count the double-post thing)

Flam, I look pretty much exactly like my pic on the UB People Pages, but I will send you a head on shot from Shayna’s wedding.

Also, there are usually not a whole lot of redheads in any given area, so that decreases your chances of wandering off with some OTHER group of fun and slightly wacky people.

Yeah, and you could just look for the hairy guy with the redhead, and that would be me.

And I will have a camera there, you can count on that.

Make that “two hairy guys with the redhead”. Well, not all that hairy (snip, snip), but I still have the beard that shows up here . (Zyada linked that from the “cutest pets” thread. Such a sweetie!)

Of course that all depends on me finding the place too. I’ll carry a street map.

Mail me any time at the address in my profile if you want my phone number.

F_X, if we’re not going to be able to document you karoake’ing Johnny Cash, then maybe I’ll just stay home and re-index my back-issues of Anagram & Palindrome Weekly. So there.

As far as finding the Granville Island Coffee House, I wasn’t able to find a photograph online, but here’s a map.

I’m house-sitting for a friend this week, so I’m away from my nice warm internet connection. (Killer library to make up for it though.)

Scotticher, thanks for saying you’ll send me the picture. I know you’re a redhead, so hopefully that’ll make it easier.

silent_rob, I know you’ll probably bring a camera, seeing as you’re on this big trip or something. But I guess that depends if you’re sober enough to do any photography. (that is, if we do any)

rjk, thanks for the link to the picture. That helps. Oh, and if I do email you, it’ll probably within the next day or so. I probably won’t, but you never know.

Larry, I’d hope that the killer library includes a good collection of books. When I see you, I’ll be likely to bug you about the books. (only because I like reading a lot, and all my friends know it) Thanks for the map, by the way. And as for Johnny Cash? Sorry. Don’t do karaoke exceot in karaoke places. (preferably with my brother and his friend butchering the lyrics, so I don’t hear how bad I really sound)

Darn! I can’t believe I didn’t think of asking my brother what it looked like when I was on the phone with him about an hour and a half ago! Maybe I’ll call him now… nope, he doesn’t know where it is. The only street he’s familiar with is Cartwright. (which doesn’t help)

Since I’m infamous for not knowing the relative postion of streets (I once told a friend that Pilgrims bookstore was at Kingsway and 49th… he told me they were parallel to each other), I’ll have to rely on the map Larry linked to. I’ll have to remember to print it out on Friday when I get to my brother’s.

Oh, and if any one of you is wondering what I look like: if you see a lost-looking Chinese person with a bunch of papers and a blue denim bag, that’ll probably be me.

And if we do go to the Folk Festival, my brother says he’ll be there too. Of course, there’s no chance of meeting him there, what with the numbers of people expected to be there. (it’s going to be really nice this weekend, with temperatures topping 26 degrees C)

So I guess that means we are meeting at The Granville Island Coffee House at 2PM and proceeding to the West End when we feel like it? I will email you my Cell Phone number and a pic of me too, Larry. And Barbarian, although I still don’t know if you are coming? It would be nice if we knew that you were coming or not… I’d hate to miss you again like we did last time. But you can always call me on the CP if you can’t make it to the GICH but want us to meet you somewhere in the West End.

OOPs…Barbarian has no email listed. Well, hon, hope you see this and can let us know if we should expect you or not. My last stop before heading to GI will be at rjk’s house, so you can email him anytime up to probably noon on Saturday and he will send you my CP#…I hope you can join us!

Well, my (free) DNS router picked the most inconvenient time possible to withdraw their services. TNSTAAFL. If I were at home, I could link to a pic, but I’m not enough of a nerd to have my IP address memorized. Might be able to manage it tomorrow. If not, I’m a brown-haired, dwarfish creature, as like as not to be smiling vaguely and staring off into space, for no adequately-explored reason.

I’m planning to swing by the Granville Island Coffee House tomorrow, since I haven’t actually set eyes on it in over a year. I’d hate like hell to suggest a place only to get there and find that it’s a smoking hole, or has been converted into an owl-stretching shop, or something. (I’m going to be in the neighborhood anyway, so I’m not being obsessive, or anything.) <twitch>

Well, thanks for the picture and the cell phone nujmber, Scotticher. That ought to help a lot.

Larry, if you’re going to swing by the coffee house later, then can you get back to this thread sometime and tell me what it looks like, as well as any landmarks around it? Thanks. That would help tremendously.

I’ve emailed rjk for Scotticher’s phone number, which should come in handy.

I’m gonna try and make it, but I make no guarantees, 'cos I suck

I haven’t been to GI Coffee House in years, but as I recall you would head to the Tourist Info centre, face it, turn left, proceed to the dock (past the Arts Club Theatre), then turn right before you step into the drink and proceed until you can buy a drink.

I will be joining you, along with my gasp non-Doper friend. Two more redheads into the mix!

Yay!!!

I’ll email you my Cell Phone #, Gingy, just in case you need to call us. Looking forward to meeting you!

I had a cup o’ mud at the Granville Island Coffee House this afternoon, just to reassure myself that it’s still there. While I still think it’s a good place to meet, (as it’s relatively easy-to-find, one of the few places that you can (nearly) loiter without offending the proprieters, has e-mail and caffeine, etc,) we might want to go somewhere else for lunch after the head-count, seeing as all they seem to offer is bagels and four different types of sandwiches.

Barbarian’s directions sound good. Get down by the edge of the water, and put yourself directly under the Granville St. Bridge, and you’re there.

Don’t be alarmed that there is no obvious signage. Apparently they figured that there were enough eponymous establishments down there, because the awning simply reads[ul]COFFEE TEA ICE CREAM SANDWICHES[/ul] When you look inside, you’ll see just about every surface covered with stencilled burlap bags. That’s the place.

Scotti, I sent your number (and mine) , so Barbarian will be able to find us.

Well, thanks for the driections. However, I think I’ll still get lost. So maybe I’ll just head over pretty early, to make sure I have enough time to find the place. If i actually do find it before 2:10, I’ll consider myself incredibly lucky. (I’m sort of infamous for getting myself lost)

If I do get there early, you can bet that I’ll probably be reading a book. So if you get there and find a Chinese woman reading a book (I don’t know what, yet), well… it could be me.

:frowning:
I won’t be able to make it. We’re having my sister, BIL and l’il niece over for dins on Sunday, and we’ve got to spend the rest of the weekend unpacking from the move to make it look all splendiferous.

But there will be more Vancouver Dopefests, right…guys? 'Cause you know…I rilly rilly miss it…

rjk, I’ve just now emailed you for your number.

I’m really looking forward to this. A bit excited, a bit nervous… but that’s all par for the course.

Whoohoo! The day has arrived, and it is not overcast.

Hallelujah!

(It’s been cloudy & muggy for a few days.)

Just out the door, as soon as I find the bottom of this pot of coffee and get through the weekend edition of The Globe & Mail.

Life is good.

You know, they were predicting a nice weekend, Larry. Of course, with the weather around here being what it is sometimes, I’ve learned not to trust the weather forecast TOO much.

I’ll be out of here in about 45 minutes of so. Woohoo! (I figure that 2 hours is enough time to get to Granville Island, or at least I hope it is) That said, I have an extremely limited knowledge of the bus route to Grancille Island, because I’ve never taken it before. As long as it goes straight to Granville Island, I should be fine. If not, you all will be waiting for me even longer than you thought you would.
