Vancouver will be hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics!

The results came in about ten minutes ago.
Vancouver, British Columbia beat out Salzburg, Austria and Pyeongchang, South Korea as host of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

A great birthday gift to Canada.

Chalk up another one for the Red & White.

Any ideas on what Roots will do to outdo themselves this time?

How does the voting process get down to three cities, anyway? Are there cities that make repeated bids?

I guess the hookers in Vancouver are better than those in Salzburg and Pyeongchang, eh?

This is great because it improves New York’s chances for Summer 2012, since it is doubtful that the IOC will award two Olympiads in a row to Canada (sorry Toronto).

Actually, BwanaBob, it pretty much screws New York over. It’s doubtful the IOC will award two Olympiads in a row to North America. Stuff I’ve been reading the last few days has suggested that Vancouver’s win may well be owed to the IOC NOT wanting to give New York 2012 as much as anything else.

I think you’re overlooking the greed of the IOC.

A New York Olympiad (in the US Eastern Time Zone) would have spectacular ratings. Ratings == big bucks for IOC via expensive broadcast rights.

There were two Olympiads in Europe back-to-back (Barcelona & Lillehammer) in 1992 and 1994.

So two in a row in North America wouldn’t be surprising.

Toronto does get screwed because they will not give two in a row to one country (anymore).

 for Vancouver, BC!

According to the Toronto Star, Vancouver getting the Olympics actually saves us the multiple billions of dollars the blookdy thing costs, not to mention the horrendous traffic (like we don’t already have enough smog!)
