Poll for the minority (probably) of us who like vanilla better than chocolate: what do you think of chocolate?
I feel like I’ve made many posts over my years on this board about how much I despise both the taste and smell of chocolate. And I do love me some vanilla. But I’m not sure there is any food I love as much as I hate chocolate.
ETA: Hopefully my vote in the poll is clear based on the above.
I wouldn’t put myself squarely in one camp or the other.
Cake - Devils Food
Ice Cream / Shakes Malts - Vanilla
Candy Bar - Zero
Soda - Crème Soda
I appreciate the virtues of each.
I love chocolate enough to call myself a chocoholic. Nonetheless, when it comes to ice cream, I prefer vanilla. Preferably with semi-sweet chocolate sauce.
I make chocolate truffles and have one after dinner every night. But when i make them, I roll them in melted chocolate and make a sauce out of the left-over melt, poured over vanilla ice cream. Nirvana.
I’m not clear whether we’re talking just ice cream or whether we mean vanilla vs chocolate in other contexts as well.
In general, chocolate is an enjoyable flavor, but it does score lower than just about any other mainstay of desserts - fruit, vanilla, caramel, etc.
However, if you mean chocolate ice cream specifically, I actually don’t care for chocolate ice cream. For me, it just doesn’t work as ice cream. Chocolate sauce on vanilla, OK (with moderation, preferably). Chocolate mousse or pudding, OK. But not chocolate ice cream.
I like chocolate OK for most things but it has never been a top pick let alone a craving. The one thing I really do not care for is a run of the mill chocolate cake. That stuff is actively gross and I just go without. Give me carrot cake or spice cake any day.
I love chocolate, of all varieties, in nearly every context. Choco cake, ice cream, candy, cookies, whatevs. Sweet, semi-sweet, bitter. Really good Ghirardelli or cheap-jack Nestles. Yum!
But, damme, I sure do like vanilla more!
I love chocolate, especially when paired with peanut butter. But I’m not overly fond of chocolate ice cream or chocolate cake. But at least it beats the hell out of strawberry.
And I absolutely loathe dark chocolate.
I love traditional American chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and the moist chocolaty bread part.
However, in other sweets, I choose vanilla flavoring much more often.
Also, as a topping or sauce, I like caramel more than chocolate.
Any or all!
Bars - I can do chocolate first; sometimes.
Ice cream &/or cake - always vanilla first.
Soda - love cream but Yoo-hoo is just nasty Devil’s spit.
I’m fine with chocolate but given my choice (such as in milkshakes) I will take vanilla every time. Something in the flavor/taste just appeals to me much more.
It’s hard for me to answer this.
Chocolate ice cream – I very much dislike the taste
Chocolate or fudge sauce on ice cream – I very much dislike the taste
Chocolate milk – I really dislike the taste.
Chocolate pudding – I really dislike the taste.
Chocolate cake is quite good
Chocolate candy is quite good.
I don’t see at all that there is a single taste in what is called chocolate.
Fair enough. I also have different reactions to chocolate. I don’t really like dark chocolate, but I’ll eat it if it’s there and I’m hungry. I’m okay with milk chocolate and and I actually like white chocolate. So it’s probably the milk flavor I like, not the choc flavor.
Chocolate is good, vanilla is better. Plain and simple.
I’ll eat vanilla cake icing with a spoon.
Well, I’m a big fan of vanilla, and I do like chocolate, but it’s hard for me to compare the two…
With chocolate, the thing is, I do find the bitter taste really strong, and only like it when it’s paired with something intensely sweet. My favorite chocolates are Cadbury creme eggs and caramilk bars, to give you an idea.
I like vanilla. I like chocolate. Vanilla + chocolate is even better. Something about vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup is worlds better than plain chocolate ice cream.
I like chocolate in nearly every form except chocolate ice cream. It doesn’t taste like chocolate at all, to me.
Would it be impolite to point out that nearly every chocolate recipe on the planet **includes **vanilla (esp white chocolate)?
The two flavors complement each other perfectly: chocolate is bitter without vanilla; vanilla is boring without chocolate. The Aztecs realized this when they mixed cacao beans and vanilla pods to make the original ‘hot chocolate’ xocolatl
“well enough”.
I get tired of chocolate. I like it strong and intense and in relatively small doses, with very little sugar or milk, but a little goes a long way. Milk chocolate is where you take something relatively nice and dilute it and spread it out and I don’t care for that much at all.
So-called “white chocolate” on the other hand I could eat until I pop. It’s, umm, vanilla flavored cocoa butter.
