So, you see I have been indulging myself in my art. I have been printing my pictures (Digital Photos) on very good stock, (HP 932C on Kodak 100 bright Photo finish paper, everything set to the best it can be.) and then I mat and frame them myself. I have given away about six, and have five on my own walls. It costs me about thirty to fifty bucks each.
I got a photo of the Jefferson Memorial that the Park Service just doesn’t know it wants so much. Sunrise, perfect reflection in the tidal basin, and TJ in the door. I have [url"http://triskadecamus.com/cherry_tree.jpg"]this tree, and the one of my ducks, (not quite in a row) and a great one of “lovers” in a forest of blossoms, done over digitally to look like a water color. I am pretty happy with them.
But this week I have done something else. I published some of my poetry. I chose eleven pieces. I printed them up on my printer, en quarto, on three sheets, with a cover that simply said Poetry, by me, this is copy number … of One Hundred, and then numbered and signed each one. I used Chrane’s Thesis Bond, one hundred percent Cotton paper. I made one hundred copies, and then deleted the file. I folded them up, and put them in envelopes, and gave them to friends (Yeah, I still have a lot left, I don’t have a hundred friends close at hand.) But I was surprised at how many people did want one. It felt good. I saved number one for the little girl who is in one of the poems, number two for my youngest son, and number thirteen for me. (Natch!) Still have a bunch, so I figure I am set for small personal gifts for a while.
Art for my own sake. I feel good about it. I may mat and frame number 100.
Do yourself a favor. Just do it. Don’t wait for your “chance to hit the big time.” I have a tape, and a patch cable, so I may try to record my songs on a CD too! What the heck.
Someday, some descendent of some friend of mine is gonna sell one of those suckers for . . . dozens of dollars!
Hey, it could happen!
