You know what I’m talking about. Somebody says something nice about you here on the boards, and you quote what they said in your sig line. Are these a fun way of celebrating the fact that you have finally “arrived” and are accepted and loved, or are they just pretentious tripe that really annoy you? If you don’t have one, do you wish somebody would say something nice to you so you could have one? Or do you fervently wish that anybody who uses a vanity sig line would be summarily taken out back and shot?
A sig line is a the freedom to express oneself at any givene moment.
What I would say “Nay” to is when people sign the bottom of their post with ‘regards’ or ‘enjoy’ - which (in my opinion) borders somewhere between unnecessary and smarmy.
I don’t have a vanity sig line. I have not arrived. When I first saw them I was impressed. The lines are very noticable.
I’m just grateful that I have not been pitted. Not that I interact in a pittable way-but sometimes people get odd about someone else’s response.
I’m going to make up my own as soon as I can think about how cool I am. Which I am, natch.
Sig lines in general act as an expression of the poster’s desire to fit into the board culture or to provide proof that they belong there. In that way they’re all kind of sad. If you don’t mind that, and vanity is the culture of the day, than let your sig be vain.
I think twickster was saying that he had made 484 posts to one thread himself. As you say, long threads are commonplace. One person making 484 entries in one thread is still pretty exceptional (I think), and maybe just a tad obsessive (?)
