Vanity sig lines: yea or nay

You know what I’m talking about. Somebody says something nice about you here on the boards, and you quote what they said in your sig line. Are these a fun way of celebrating the fact that you have finally “arrived” and are accepted and loved, or are they just pretentious tripe that really annoy you? If you don’t have one, do you wish somebody would say something nice to you so you could have one? Or do you fervently wish that anybody who uses a vanity sig line would be summarily taken out back and shot?

What say you?

Barry

I’m not sure what you mean, exactly.

Yay!

Yay.

A sig line is a the freedom to express oneself at any givene moment.

What I would say “Nay” to is when people sign the bottom of their post with ‘regards’ or ‘enjoy’ - which (in my opinion) borders somewhere between unnecessary and smarmy.

Errrr… When you guys say “yay,” are you agreeing with me or simply getting all excited?

Regards

Barry

Dear Senor godzillatemple,

I believe they are answering the question asked in your thread title.

Yours muy sincerely,

dan.

No, that would be “yea” and not “yay”…

Sorry, I just thought it was cool that everybody would be cheering for me

I don’t have a vanity sig line. I have not arrived. When I first saw them I was impressed. The lines are very noticable.

I’m just grateful that I have not been pitted. Not that I interact in a pittable way-but sometimes people get odd about someone else’s response.
I’m going to make up my own as soon as I can think about how cool I am. Which I am, natch.

Sig lines in general act as an expression of the poster’s desire to fit into the board culture or to provide proof that they belong there. In that way they’re all kind of sad. If you don’t mind that, and vanity is the culture of the day, than let your sig be vain.

Nay. If you have to keep reminding me how cool you are, chances are you aren’t that cool.

My answer is written in the third darkest shade of clear on the back side of this thread.

I have a vanity sig, but I only use it when it’s somhow relevant to the post.

And dated, twickster, considering how many threads currently exist that have more than twice as many posts in them!

Dan,

I think twickster was saying that he had made 484 posts to one thread himself. As you say, long threads are commonplace. One person making 484 entries in one thread is still pretty exceptional (I think), and maybe just a tad obsessive (?)

Could be, considering how big that thread was.

And as it turns out, that’s what it was:

Explains why some people have such high post counts, huh?

Me? I rarely look at the things.

Very truy yours,
V

I don’t go for vanity sigs.

Ludovic, you are the most scintillating example of tactical brilliance the Empire has ever seen!” - Napoleon Bonaparte.

This applies to all aspects of one’s life, not just sig lines. Personally, I think that vanity sig lines reek of desperation and insecurity.
