This day 60 years ago - May 8th 1945 - was VE day. Britain successfully held of the Nazis, but we couldn’t have freed Europe and conquered Nazism without you.
To all of those who fought so we could stay free.
The good guys won. Glad we were able to help out, and I thank everyone, Poms, Yanks, Aussies, Maquis, who fought the good fight or supported those who fought the good fight.
Those who have the ability to stop evil have the responsibility to act.
On behalf of both my grandfathers, you are most assuredly welcome.
We helped.
You did your part.
The Russians did plenty!
I’m genuinely sorry so many civilians on the other side died.
I’m even sorrier that the victims of the Axis did.
I’m not sorry that the Axis leadership suffered.
I wish I could say we’ll never see their like again.
But I know mankind too well to believe that last one.
What a nice post! Although it was a horrible time, it’s good to look back now and realize that a whole lot of individuals, leaders and nations joined up to defeat a truly evil regime. We tend to read about it now, and assume it was inevitable, but my late mother used to remind me that for a long time it was not at all a foregone conclusion that the Nazis would not win. So many different contributions; the more you read, the more you will be amazed at the number of crucial, critical individuals, groups, and technologies about which it was said, “We could not have won that war without…”
