Yes, I have to admit that Fry’s is in no danger of going bankrupt due to lack of business in Las Vegas (I list them on my website as a place to go - maybe I should delete that fact!?)
However, getting in and out of there is a major pain - I usually take the long way around and come in off of Russel and go south down LV Blvd so that I can avoid having to cross that lane from the other direction. While it has never taken me more than 10 minutes to get in or out, I almost always try to go mid-week at a fairly early hour. Went there once on a weekend and will not make that mistake again.
Still - I love that place and I feel like a kid at Christmas every time I go there
I agree it is a great store, and it is nice they have one in Vegas, but it absolutely needs a traffic light. Maybe it is not the fault of Las Vegas. The Fry brothers are notoriously cheap. Maybe they didn’t want to pony up a share of the cost. It really is pretty messed up though. Fry’s is so essential to a lot of folks, maybe they figure take it or leave it.
Technically, Fry’s is in Clark County, not the city of Las Vegas. Blame our combination of corrupt and STUPID County Commissioners for this one.
I’ve generally found the best time to go to Fry’s to be during the first hour they’re open on the weekend, but YMMV. (Of course, we’re just turning out of Fry’s and onto 215 west to go home, so traffic is easier for us than for most people.)
Well, the good news is that they are building that super-mega-shopping-entertainment structure there and Fry’s will be attached at the south end, so I assume when that project is finished, there will be a few lights along the way to allow the even MORE people to flood into the parking lots, but at least without the danger of being rammed head on by a semi truck.
We rented a house today! North of the Ann Road/Craig area (Thank you Smokinjbc). The new Costco is conveniently close, the commute is perfect for both of us (and doesn’t go anywhere near the spaghetti bowl!), there’s a Trader Joe’s reasonably close to my office, and my very nice new kitchen has a refrigerator with the freezer on the Bottom! Squee!
Oops – did I just squee in public? About a* refrigerator*?
Anyway, we also noted the location of the Frye’s with the evil traffic flow, and met the very polite neighbor kids.
I can’t wait to meet all of you! Thank you very much for all your help and advice. I think we will love it – as long as the A/C is on, anyway!
So, uh, did the kids offer to help you set up your new home security pass code?
Welcome to the neighborhood - we Las Vegas Dopers will be soon be showing up in our welcome wagons bearing gifts (half a six pack). If ya want, we will be glad to take your life savings and put it all on red and double your money for ya - let us know.
(See you at the next Las Vegas Dopefest - I intend to put feelers out soon to see the best dates for this year. I am thinking around the beginning of August - yeah, a tad toasty, but the room rates, as well as flights, are usually dirt cheap during that time of year. And from experience, if you want a successful Dopefest, the key word is CHEAP.)
You could probably ask those nice neighborhood kids to run get ya a six pack.
But seriously, Nevada is quite liberal in that respect…you can pick up just about anything you want at your local supermarket, every day of the week, year-round. There are a few specialty liquor stores, and you can also get beer and some cheap wine and booze just going into the local gas station. In other words, you can pretty much buy any liquor almost anywhere in Nevada except Toys R Us.
The neighbor kids aren’t big enough to reach the alarm keypad, much less help us unload the Uhaul, and they weren’t at all helpful on the location of the nearest beer vendor. They did have a pizza delivery number memorized, however, so I shan’t kick their puppy.
We’re here, 90% unpacked, and 65% settled. Shall we schedule a “thanks for the info” meet & greet? Someone else is going to have to suggest a place – I can find the post office, DMV & sometimes the 215.
My email is in my profile (username @gmail) – I’m afaid of over-exerting the hamster, but if you’re brave, go ahead and post a suggestion, but be prepared to provide very clear, detailed directions to your hostess.
