Once again, my beloved Giant freakin marine is making me move. It’s the nature of the beast – he is in Construction, so the day he starts a project is the day he starts working himself out of a job. His new project is in Logandale. I will transfer to the Vegas (just off The Strip) office, and we are planning on splitting the difference for commutes.
So, tell me all about living close to Las Vegas. Neither of us gamble, both of us are anticipating the food, airfares and non-gambling nightlife.
What do the locals do after work? Where do you shop? Who is your favorite Vet? Gynocologist? Dentist? Do you have a nice Horse Property with a fabulous kitchen and large closets available for an 18 month lease? Will my Bougainvillia survive?
We do the same thing people who don’t live here do after work, locals lead fairly normal lives
There is tons of shopping here- just about anything you want. It is probably safe to say Las Vegas has some of the best shopping in the world. We just lack an IKEA I think thats it.
I take my cats to Spencer Springs Vetrinary Clinic/Animal Hospital on Warm Springs and Spencer. Although there are many good vets all over town. Get a recommendation from your current vet if possible because I am not sure they take horses.
Horse properties are common here, but scattered around town. You may want to go with a realtor that deals in rentals to help with that one.
Yes, the Bougainvillia will do fine- just keep it watered in the summer months and bring it in for the cold snaps in winter. Mine does well, it’s planted in a covered patio area.
**What do the locals do after work? **
I don’t know what the women do, but we guys take off our pasties, one nipple at a time, like everybody else in the USA.
Where do you shop?
If we hit it big at the slots, Armani - otherwise, aisle 5 at Walmart.
**Who is your favorite Vet? **
John Kerry.
Gynecologist? Dentist?
Nope. I’m a teacher.
Do you have a nice Horse Property with a fabulous kitchen and large closets available for an 18 month lease?
No, but you are going in the right direction - wish someone had told me when I first moved here to look at renting a house instead of an apartment - for about the same price you can get a three bedroom house instead of a two bedroom apartment.
Will my Bougainvillea survive?
Sadly, yes…and every one of those damned million petals will blow over and land in my pool and I will have to unclog the drain again.
Be sure to let us know when you arrive - we locals have a welcome wagon for new residents; it is not hazing per se but it does involve copious amounts of alcohol and table dancing. We’ll explain more about the initiation once you are here and LVgeogeek, this time it is your turn to bring the bong.
I heard they are finally building one here this year - and if I am not mistaken, it will be at that new super structure by Fry’s, but not 100% sure of location.
Trader Joe’s website says there are 3 of 'em in the area, so I feel better about that kind of shopping already. What is Ikea?
Armani? How exciting! I’m barely used to having both Target and Penneys nearby!
I will call Spencer Springs vet clinic next month, unless someone else pops in to recommend a vet who specializes in geriatric cats. My old ill cat will move when we do, the horses can stay where they are until we’re set up and ready for them.
Gee, thanks, DMark but I’ll have to pass on the table dancing. I have a severe case of Rhythm Deficit Disorder, and wouldn’t want to destroy any furniture. You go right on ahead, though – I’ll bring a camera to record your efforts for posterity.
My vet is Northwest Veterinary Clinic on Cheyenne and Jones. It’s 20+ miles from where we live now, but the doctors there really do care about the animals they treat, and we’ve taken geriatric dogs in there with no trouble.
I’m told that Southwest Veterinary Clinic on Tropicana and Jones specializes in exotic pets.
PM me for gynecologic and other medical recommendations, please; I have a couple depending on specialty or subspecialty.
shhhhhhhhh!!! What happeed to the chicken? I really need to be updated on these things
My company does the building materials testing for IKEA. We probably won’t see one here until 2008 or 2009 those bastards! My consolation prize is that there are many in the L.A. area where my sister now lives. Too bad it is a 5 hour drive to get there.
LVgeogeek, thanks for the update on IKEA - I know I heard something about it on the news recently and was happy to hear they were coming to Las Vegas - and I guess waiting until 2008 is better than having them never come here.
And MadPansy64, if you really like to shop, you have hit it big by moving here. On the Strip alone you can find almost any major designer and there is even a Bloomingdales at the Fashion Mall. However, I think you will quickly discover the outlet stores that offer great deals on name brand items. There are a couple to choose from, but the most popular is the Las Vegas Outlets, a mile or so south of Mandalay Bay on the Strip and there is another outlet store downtown near the World Market Center. Between the two of those locations you should easily max out your credit cards and still save money in the process - you just have to explain how that works to your husband.
I absolutely HATE to shop, but it’s a necessary evil. I’m a devout cheapskate, my boss frowns on nekkid employees, and one must eat, after all. If I have to shop, and I do, I want it to be as not horrible as possible.
Sounds like my M-I-L and sister-in-laws would enjoy visiting. May we keep the malls our little secret, and let them continue believing Vegas is all hookers, slot machines and Elvis impersonators? Pretty Please?
I’m a rarity- a Southern Nevada native- I was born in Boulder City, about 20 miles from Vegas. Obstetrics in Boulder City are hit & miss so that makes me even more special
After work- if its July- Aug hot you simply grab a beer and park yourself next to the nearest a/c vent. I have dogs and do doggy type stuff with them but having had horses my guess is that you will go ride. The great thing is that you can ride…all…year…long. It’s amazing. The kicker is that from July- Sept you better find somewhere to ride that has lights because you will need to be out there no earlier than 10 p.m to make it bearable.
Luckily, the other 9 months of the year there will rarely be a day that riding is not possible so long as you don’t mind bone chilling, wicked wind- which is what we had yesterday although today was FANTASTIC!
Places you must visit and should get to know while here:
Crown & Anchor pub on Trop/near Maryland Pkwy.- holy crap its great food and a very non-Vegas atmosphere if you ignore the video poker.
Fado’s at Green Valley Ranch on Friday/Sat late night. Only if you have a sense of humor and a love of punk/pseudo-Irish type *Gin & Juice * music (if Whiskey Nancy is not there, try again another night!)
Red Rock Conservation Area- great for hiking and general scenery.
Must … Must… Must… visit the Double Down Saloon. It is THE quintessential Vegas Dive with a twist of A$$ juice.
Even if you don’t gamble- there are a few casinos that have things worth seeing: The Flamingo- just because, Ceasar’s Palace- for the awesome aquarium and stupid but impressive shopping mall, The Plaza- for the lowest of the low, The Mirage- check out Siegfreid & Roy’s Secret Gardens, The Bellagio for pure decadence (the hotel lobby is gorgeous and the seasonally changing plant conservatory). Oh… and check out the Peppermill restaurant- wow…Vegas Baby indeed. Especially the bar.
Horseman’s Park is where the cheap horsey stuff is - I hear that Sun Coast Casino also has an arena now too and is geared to horsey folk. At Horseman’s Park- beware because it is built directly over/ or at least near a very putrid swamp and you will smell interesting, if sometimes noxious smells.
Ok… a few “must eats” . At least my personal (very low brow) ones are… Gyro Time near Decatur/Charleston- you cant go wrong with Greek Salad w/gyro meat and extra feta cheese dressing, Crown & Anchorr Guiness pie, Maui Rose Crunch Dragon Roll (Rainbow & Oakey) or any very authentic seeming Thai Food at* Prommares * on Sahara/Torrey Pines. Also… Chipotle in Henderson ( and now Cheyenne/95) , and *Pf Changs/ Buca Di Beppos * (very close and hard to choose from in the Paradise/ Flamingo area). We used to have a great oyster bar at Sunset Station, but last few times its sucked
:(.
Ok… if you have to split the commute to Logandale- you will want to look at horse property off of Ann Road/Craig area. Luckily that end of town has more horse property. I don’t know that you can really split the difference except to get on the far end of I-15 which will make the Strip a very easy shoot. Price wise, you may find something cheaper and more horse friendly in Logandale and the commute in that direction shoudn’t be horrible. It really never gets bad until you get to the Spaghetti Bowl (95/I-15) which you will probably have to negotiate anyways if you want to keep horses. I live in another horse friendly part of town (Sunrise/near Nellis) and you could probably get something here but wouldn’t have good access to desert trail riding like you would on the Craig/Ann road area.
If you are a horsey person with a sense of humor- try Boulder City Horsemans Association Saturday Night Team Penning. It is as amusing as hell and twice the fun. Watch out for mounted drunks…seriously.
You can expect a city government that doesn’t give a damn about anything but the developers and the casinos. Can anyone explain why after FOUR YEARS the Las Vegas Fry’s still has one lane exiting to LV Blvd. with a STOP SIGN so it takes you 90 minutes to leave the god damned parking lot? Let’s just develop the crap out of the south strip and not do dick about traffic!
What do you expect from a town where come election time the most important offices are the sheriff and the judges? Who cares if the traffic is approaching gridlock, we just better make sure the casinos get their way in court any time they want to claim an “equipment malfunction” and screw somebody out of a jackpot.
Las Vegas is fun to visit, but those who live there are truly the damned.
It has never taken me 90 minutes to get out Fry’s onto LVB, maybe 10 minutes on a bad day. When were you there Christmas Eve or when all the CES/COMDEX (or other gadget freaks) conventioneers are in town? Just curious.
I say the same thing about L.A.
I have lived here for almost 11 years, and other than on occasional traffic snarl that I get stuck in and the brutal late summer heat- it isn’t so bad.
Your wife already knows. I was talking about Giant freakin marines (aka “That Damn Bullrider” to his in-laws) herd of half & full sisters. I’m pretty sure they don’t read, so unless Dmark tells 'em, they’ll never know about the shopping.
Shhhhhh!
I’ve done that! We went to a conference there, so while he was busy being all professional and productive on a saturday night, I drank Guiness and people-watched. That was fun.
We’re meeting with a realtor next Thursday. I’ll mention the Ann Road/Craig area as someplace we’d like to discuss, as well as Logandale and Henderson.
I was there two weeks ago. The lines (yes plural) started in the middle of the parking lot and merged and merged and merged and merged once again around the back of the store. It easily took us more than an hour to get out. Absolute insanity.
