Vegetable seed providers

Well, the days are starting to get longer, that rat in Puxatawney has come out of it’s hole to “predict” the coming of spring, and the ordering time for our vegetable seeds for the upcoming season is drawing near.

Who do you folks use?

I’m looking at an order from Gurneys for a variety of seeds, and pregrown plants.

For hotpeppers, I’ll likely go with PepperJoe.

Before I place my orders for the upcoming spring, anyone have any suggestions? Tips for starting? etc…?

If you’re looking for opinions, you’ll do better in IMHO.

I like Seeds of Change (www.seedsofchange.com). They’re organic open-pollinated varieties, with a lot of heirloom seeds. I’m growing five kinds of heirloom tomatoes this year with their seeds; we’ll see how it goes! (Also Kentucky Wonder beans, beets, fennel, Smart Pickle cucumbers, lots of herbs, and one of their salad mixes. I am probably forgetting six or seven crops. This year I am ambitious.)

Back when I was growing sweet corn, Gurney had the most to choose from. Most of the rest came from Park and Burpee. I’d avoid Michigan Seed; they have a rep for junk plants and lost orders.

I opened this thread to recommend this company. Lots of wonderful varieties of seeds, good prices and service.

Jung in Wisconsin has a nice blend of open-pollinated “Heritage” varieties, standard varieties, and modern gee-whiz hybrids. Sort of “something for everyone”.

I used to use Burpee’s for most of my seeds, until I moved here, and they somehow couldn’t change my address, so they sent all my seeds and plants to my old address all the way across the country. Now I buy from the nursery where I pick up my seedlings.

I use Dominion Seed company…along with Richters Herbs here. I wish I could get some seeds from hotter climates, they have such beautiful flowers. Guess we couldn’t start a seed exchange?

I suspect it wouldn’t do you a whole lot of good to get my seeds in Canada, without a greenhouse and a full time gardening job.

Hmm…

Interesting suggestions all.

In review, I’m actually thinking I might get many of my seeds for this year from the local Agway. Some of the things I’m getting though, I’ll still be getting via Gurneys, as I can never seem to figure out the timing of plant arrivals at the local garden stores. (Potato sets, onion sets, and a few cherry bushes)

Thanks all
