Verizon FiOS question

Hello everyone. I’m thinking about switching from Comcast cable (TV and internet) to Verizon’s FiOS “triple play” of TV, internet, and phone. My concern is that I won’t be able to remotely access my computer over the FiOS. I have software that runs that allows me to access my computer over the internet from anywhere, and I’d like to keep this functionality. It requires a forwarded port on my wireless router. The FiOS website made me nervous by saying things like “you must use our wireless router” and “you cannot host any servers” etc. Does the FiOS router allow you to forward ports from the outside to a specific computer on the inside? Can anyone who has FiOS shed light on this? TIA!

I have FIOS triple play, but have never tried to set up port forwarding. The standard Verizon wireless router is the Actiontec MI424WR. According to this review, it does support port forwarding, or at least it exists in the admin interface. Further googling suggests people have gotten port forwarding working for their slingbox, though not as painlessly as one would hope.

Part of the reason you have to use their router is it has a MoCA (ethernet over coax) interface, which the STB requires for multi-TV DVR, program guide data, media extender, etc.

I’ll check my router tonight if you don’t get a more definitive answer. FWIW, I switched from Comcast to FIOS back in August, and overall I’ve been happy with it.

Thanks! I’d appreciate it if you could check on this for me!

I have to use simliar software for my work, and have had no issues. With the Actiontec router they gave me, I was able to do all of the things I could with my Linksys router, so I would imagine coming in from outside would not be difficult.

The bit about having to use their router is hogwash; the router they “gave” me originally died last week, and I hooked up my old Linksys in it’s place. The only thing is you have to call them after you connect the router, so they can release/renew your IP.

IMHO, ditch Comcast. As fast as possible. I have had FiOS for 1.5 years, and have loved every moment of it. Connection is awesome. Tech support is awesome. Price kicks ass.

Thanks guys! I’m going to sign up tonight. Not only will it cost me about half of what I’m currently paying every month for TV, cable, and internet, but they’re going to give me a free 19" HDTV!

I’ve had FIOS for the past 4 months or so. You can forward all the ports you want using their router (although the web-interface to the router blows, IMHO). The one hick-up is that Verizon blocks incoming port 80, so no web-server running out of the house unless you run it on a non-standard port.

I’m pretty happy with the service, however, by the time I was done with upgrades (HD DVR, 15 down/2 up on the internet) and taxes/fees, my bill is $145 a month, a far-cry from the $99 they claim. The internet speeds are fabulous and the TV picture quality is remarkable, so much better than what I got with comcast.

This is the reason it nearly came to blows when a FIOS agent came to my house at dinnertime uninvited and tried to con me into switching. My current bill, tax included, is $105/month. She kept telling me their service was $99/mo. I have friends who switched so I called her on this lie. She was adamant about the $99. Then she changed tactics saying I’d get so many more channels. I told her that I don’t want more - the only reason I’d switch is to have the same services for less money.

I rip up Verizon FIOS junk mail out-of-hand now. They’ll have to practically blow me to ever get my business.
