Vests unbuttoned and fast shuffles

In this column, Unca Cecil discusses the tradition of leaving the bottom button of men’s vests unbuttoned.

In the original column, the inital paragraph of Cecil’s answer to Sylvia D.'s question said something to the effect that the “Just in case” alluded to in the question was a “joke of ineffable stupidity” - so stupid, in fact, that Cecil wasn’t even going to bother explaining it.

That line always stuck with me. In fact, I was going to post to the Embarrassing Epiphanies thread tonight to confess that even after all these years, I still didn’t get that joke.

When I searched for the column to link to it, I discovered that the whole line about jokes of ineffable stupidity has been excised.

So - what was the joke, the one I was too dumb to get?

And what’s the idea of retroactively editing the columns?

One plaintive bump. Nothing? Nothing at all?
