My car, a 2 year old Nissan Versa, has suddenly become a lot more noisy. When idling, it sounds like the exhaust is vibrating for some reason, like there’s some sort of harmonic resonance.
It kind of sounds like “brr… brr… BRRRRRRRrrRRRRR… brr… brrrrr… brr… BRRRRRRR”.
Is this going to be anything serious? I’m thinking of bringing the car in to the dealer’s for maintenance soon anyway, but I’m hoping this isn’t going to be a major extra.
Your problem , its a heat shield that has come loose! 95% chance thats what it is! Is it under your drivers seat? Ever had your catalytic converter changed! In all probability its your HS to you CConverter!
IF your car is only two years old, it should still be under warranty. It’s possible that the exhaust system is not covered by the warranty, though. If you’re not sure, it’s best to ask your dealer.
In any event, Lunchy’s right, it’s probably just a heat shield on the cat or harmonic resonator, or possibly up on the exhaust manifold; these shields usually have small/light attachment points that rust through fairly quickly. I’d get under the car (if that’s where the noise is coming from) and wiggle the exhaust by hand, looking for loose stuff. I’ve fixed them before by strapping them down to the pipe with a hose clamp; doesn’t have to be wicked-tight, just tight enough to spring-load the shield and stop it from loosely rattling.
:eek:OMG! IWOULDN’T DRIVE THAT CAR ANOTHER MILE IF I WERE YOU! YOU’RE TAKING YOUR LIFE IN YOUR HANDS! But I can fix it for a mere $$$$$$
Hey, Tabby, just preparing you for a trip to the dealership. Yeah, I’d take the above posters’ advice and look for the easy fix first. Hope they’re right.
