How is it possible to watch TYT and not see clear bias?
I think they used to be better, a couple years ago. Nowadays they’re heavy into click bait, sensationalism, and simplistic narratives. The sort of stuff they used to make fun of in other media outlets. I wouldn’t hold them up as experts on anything, though they tend to go more indepth than other joke shows like Real Time or The Daily Show.
They don’t have science chops. They fall into “the latest report says…” type of journalism without having the ability to parse it. They’ll gush over a study that had like 9 people if the result will get clicks.
They’re great (by which I mean they agree with me) on corruption in politics, the security state, foreign interventionism, media propaganda, the drug war and related issues, and criticizing Dems (though they still carry their water through lesser of two evilism logic). They’re comfortable with dissident voices, which is nice. They’re often pretty bad on social issues, though their heart is in the right place. Sometimes one step away from tumblr logic, or the Republican stereotype of leftist social policy. Like a lot of lib outlets they whiffed hard on the Zimmerman story but unlike others I don’t think they ever backtracked.
Cenk gets a lot of heat about the Armenian genocide. A lot of his mannerisms and catch phrases are tired, borderline cringe, but they have a certain familiar charm I suppose. He has some Bill O’Reilly-esque puffery when he brags about his juggernaut internet ratings. Most of their videos have less than 100k views, so I’m not sure wtf he’s talking about. There are people who play video games or give make-up advice for a living who are more culturally relevant. His bitterness over MSNBC sounds like so much sour grapes.
It’s funny when they criticize news shows (especially Fox) for having hot leggy babes to titillate the male audience. Meanwhile, you have Ana Kasparian right there in her skimpy blouse being a bombshell and making all these juvenile suggestive jokes and winking at the camera. I’m sure they’d say she’s qualified to discuss serious issues and the other news bimbos are just eye candy. Maybe, but like a third of the comment section is saying they want Ana to sit on their face. When Gina Grad might be your “ugliest” woman co-host you can’t criticize anyone for pandering to horny dudes.
Ben Mankiewicz is pretty damn chill. Everyone else is meh.
VICE gets full credit for actually going places to investigate, rather than hiding behind a desk and doing interviews. And a lot of their reporting is neither liberal or conservative, it’s opening a door on a segment of life that we would not see otherwise.
This VICE video has been nominated for a Webby Award. It’s especially remarkable because the cameraman later became part of the story. Yes, it was shot by Ashoka Mukpo, who later went to work for NBC and got Ebola himself two days later. SFW.
Two of the stricken American missionaries have gone back to Liberia, as did a British nurse who was working for a secular organization (MSF, I think) in Sierra Leone. He has too.
I live how Vice gets out there and reports on things that don’t get a lot of media attention elsewhere, however I’m quite skeptical about the veracity of their reporting. Most of what they talk about I don’t know enough about to fact check, but their episode on the violence in Chicago was just full of factual errors.
