vicodin for bladder infection discomfort?

(I know you’re not a doctor)

I am about to go absolutely mental with a UTI. Came on like a freight train this afternoon. Had some good sex over the weekend, and I probably didn’t clean up well enough, you know, the post-sex bladder emptying, and general cleaning up of stuff… (I’m female in a monog. relationship, BTW) I have some leftover Biaxin that I’m taking until I can get to the doctor. I’m drinking water/cranberry juice like a mutha. I’m peeing as much as I can. God it hurts, but the urgency is worse than the pain.

I don’t do well when I’m uncomfortable, and I’m wondering if something like vicodin will numb the discomfort. I’m not interested in taking it to be unconscious, as I know that peeing will help, but will it help with the abject madness I’m going through right now?

In general, opiate analgesics don’t ‘numb’ pain, they make you not care about it as much. Vicodin also has Tylenol in it, that may or may not help with the pain as well.
In a hypothetical situation, Vicodin shoud help dull the pain, I was given some for my kidney infection a few years ago.
BTW I assume you’ve already seen a doctor, if what you have is truly a kidney infection, antibiotics are going to get rid of the pain alot better then vicodin.

You know, there are OTC products that reduce/eliminate the urgency and pain until you can get to the doctor, and they’re non-narcotic. Phenazopyridine is the active ingredient, found in products like Uristat. I can recommend this from personal experience, but must add the caution that this stuff will color your urine an eye-searing orange. Since it’s a dye, it’ll also clearly point out where you don’t scrub so well in the toilet, whether you whiz in the shower, and if you dribble in light-colored underwear. (The former two can be scrubbed off, the latter, probably not.) But oh, the relief, it makes it all worthwhile.

When I have a really painful UTI, my urologist often prescribes an antibiotic and Vicodin (or sometimes Darvocet) and Phenazopyridine, the prescription-strength stuff. For me, it’s a winning combination, the only downside being that I can’t take the Vicodin/Darvocet if I need to drive anywhere.
