On Virtual On in the arcades I figured out how to do Viper II’s “S.L.C” on my own. I was also (as far as I can remember) undefeated by other players due to this, and although Viper II has the defense of Jell-O, as long as you keep moving/running and being a swift target and firing as you move, they overall can’t touch you very much.
When Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter was still big in arcades, I once had a winning streak of over a dozen matches using the teamup of Ken / Shuma-Gorath. Use Ken to build up the meter, Shuma-Gorath would plant eye bombs on the opponent and play keep-away until they exploded, repeat the processes until super meter reaches max, then use Shuma-Gorath’s super move (makes him flash, then just chase after and hit the enemy. Whether they block or not, they got sucked into a vortex that would take out about 75% of their health meter if they were at max. if less than max, they were pretty much toast). I eventually had to stop because my mom came to take me home, and an employee of the arcade told her how good I was doing. I felt happy.
I can’t really think of anything impressive during my gaming over the years. Overall I suck at adventure/platformer games, so I can’t really say much. In Final Fantasy Tactics I made a “Paladin” class that was pretty untouchable for the most part, but I don’t think that’s much of an achievement…
Contra - When the game first came out, I could only beat it with the aid of the Konami code and the help of my big brother, but a few years ago I actually managed to clear the game without getting hit once. My high score after a few clears is something like 6.1 million.
Starcraft - My friends and I played this in high school; when we weren’t futzing around with UMS maps, we’d play each other or the computer. 1 player vs 7 comps on max difficulty was beyond our reach, but a team of 2v6 was often an even challenge.
Devil May Cry - I beat the game on Dante Must Die mode.
Guitar Hero III - Cleared on Hard.
Poker Smash - I ran into the #1 player on Live at the time doing some ranked matches one night, and actually beat him once. It was totally by accident, but I’m still pretty frickin proud of it.
Team Fortress 2 - I ended up getting the “First Do No Harm” achievement without really trying. (As a medic, I healed and gave enough assists that I was at the top of the scoreboard without firing a single shot.)
And this one’s not true anymore, but I once reached the top 500 in overall score in the online ‘Elite Beat Agents’ knockoff Osu! I can’t keep up with the new beatmaps, lately…
I finished GTA4 100% unlocking the attack chopper (which is basically useless).
I did all the stunt-jumps, killed all 200 pigeons, did every side mission, etc.
I downloaded maps for the pigeons and stunt jumps and printed them in color on A3 paper.
Then I just killed them pigeons one by one and crossed them off.
It took me quite a while though.
While talking about free time (and wasted time), here’s my brag : I’ve played GTA4 through three times. Last one was done to 100%, and after that did the Liberty City Marathon on Rockstar Social Club. I spent about 170 hours on that one, but at least I got to be #1 on the marathon ranking for about 2 months. Whee.
I found all 97 exits in Super Mario World. (So what if the first time I needed a Game Genie to do it? I’m not godly like the rest of you guys. :P)
Nippon Ichi related; again, not so much to brag about except my spectacular lack of a social life as a result of these “accomplishments”:
Beaten Baal in Disgaea, no bills passed (but wasn’t interested in the grind it would take to defeat the level 6000 Prinny Baal or trying to beat Baal on any of the “Make Enemies Harder” bills).
Beaten the optional bosses up to, but not including, Pringer X in Phantom Brave (again, the grind got to me).
Beaten, and acquired, all of the bonus characters for Makai Kingdom (thank goodness that game had various ways I could stack the deck in my favor).
Beaten Baal in the regular mode in Disgaea 2, no bills passed (and there was no way in hell I was going to even attempt Prinny Baal in that one).
I recall in Final Fantasy VII the first time I decided to seriously try to fight Emerald Weapon. I’d heard about how tough it was, I got all leveled up and prepared, I read the guides - then two rounds in, Cait Sith used his random instant kill Limit Break and it was over, just like that. I sat staring at the screen for perhaps 30 seconds, thinking it was a bug or something.
I beat that chocobo race in Final Fantasy X, the one you need for Tidus’s ultimate weapon in two tries. Sheer luck; I never got it again.
I managed to fall off the edge of the world in Too Human for XBox 360.
It was on the hell level, I backed up whilst shooting at some enemies, and happened to fall off the back of the entrance to the room, just as a platform was raising up to prevent me from going further backwards.
I apparently fell through the platform onto the ground outside, and was effectively trapped. I then walked off the edge of the edge of a cliff and fell into an area that wasn’t supposed to be enterable.
I was tempted to see what would happen if I stuck around, but Too Human only has one save slot (it uses checkpoint saves) and I didn’t want to risk the game saving while I was in this predicament and permanently hosing my current game.
I second this! Any ascension would be like a lifetime accomplishment for me. Prolly why, no matter how much I like SLASH’EM, I tend to go back to the more linear ADOM or Zangband. :o
~Robin Goodfellow, killed by a floating eye.
I beat ADOM once with a High Elven Paladin. This was before there were all the special endings, so it was just a plain non-chaos victory, but as much as I played that game I was pretty proud of it.
How the heck did you get killed by the floating eye? I’ve gotten YASD’d often enough by newts / grid bugs / kobolds / etc while helpless due to screwing up the attack on the floating eye.
Congratulations Wolverine!
Once you beat Luigi’s purple coins a few times, it gets a lot easier. It was more difficult for me to complete the ghost race you spoke of earlier. Damn that was tough.
I think I’ll play a little Galaxy now actually…
